Everyone with laptops.

Everyone that has a laptop needs to check into this problem. I contacted SD about this and they have yet to duplicate the problem which is getting kind of old. Anyway, everyone that's got WB5 on their laptops needs to set their Power Management to Laptop (to allow the PM to throttle their CPU speed) and then look at the CPU speed (Right click on My Computer and Properties) with WB5 unloaded and then with it loaded. For some wacky reason on my AMD Turion ML-37 proc in my Ferrari with WB5 loaded the proc maxes out it's speed. When I unload it goes back to it's 800MHz setting (maxed it's at 2.0GHz). Anyway, nothing is killing the task manager so something with WB has to be pushing the CPU just enough to make it think it needs to go to full power. Anyway, people with Intel Centrino setups should have speed stepping as well. Anyone out there with WB5 on laptops really need to check into this and see if you're seeing the same issues. Thanks

I've been a very frustrated WFX fan since I made the mistake, before I knew it was one, of buying an nVidia graphics card for my Win2K rig nearly 3 years ago. I would "really" like to use the transitions in particular, but they only sort of work, even in the "fallback" mode, so I've been left using only the shadows & Desktop Icon features. Most ATI cards have run WFX very smoothly until some recent hiccups with their drivers & newer GPU's came along.

Even on my XP notebook with ATI IGP 340 graphics, WFX's performance is significantly limited & I'm stuck with Fujitsu's proprietary ATI driver set that they haven't updated since I bought the rig 14 months ago.

I recently bought my wife a new Fujitsu wide-screen XP MCE notebook with a new ATI mobile GPU & dedicated VRAM - I've been itching to try WFX on that rig, but I've been told where to look for my nuts if I so much as touch it.

lol...yep...I know that threat only to well Dave re trying to treat a member of the family to customizing on their respective PC....with regard to my lap upgrade in the summer, I went from a Dell Latitude W2K to a Toshiba Satellite XP & man, the driver problems;my old faithful effective security system from my ISP was causing my CPU to run @ 100%/24/7 but took me a month of elimination after suffering those cursed blue crash screens demanding I verify my drivers;unheard of on W2K - after removing the old security, Googled & came up with Kaspersky from Russia due to their high user & functionality ratings & flexability with a 30 day tryout. As far as the FX, after disabling 'hardware accelleration' it does work well & it is a very cool detail to have for the browser & taskbar menus - it does freeze up browser windows if too many are open when transferring files from my 40G USB or transferring big download files from one folder to another.

People with Toshiba Satellite... If it keeps crashing on you.. try this.

Change (CPU name) to AGP driver to PCI standard for PCI to PCI Bridge and BSODs during playing games or movies will competely stop. No idea why, I found it at some site and it worked for me.

Since I don't want anyone to take my remarks personally (if I disagree with someone, it's about ideas expressed or positions taken, with the rare exception of folks who are deliberately insulting or intentionally offensive), I virtually always sign off with Cheers, regardless of context - force of habit.

Through no fault of Stardock's, nVidia hasn't followed through, since you are quite correct - the only market they care about is the 3D gaming market. Rather unfair to hold SD responsible - we should be complaining to the video driver makers (I have, repeatedly) in order to get some of that "grease", though I'm not optimistic they'll do anything to address their 2D deficiencies

Well, to me the next logical step for SD would have been to change the code of their app to better suit the unchangeable limitations of the chipsets. Remember the application development is dependant upon chipset design, not the other way arround.

I'd agree if that were in fact a way to fix it. I'm no programmer, but from what I've read about it, including what the lead developer of WB has said, it's the 2D drivers that dictate what can & can't be done with the display & SD can't make gold out of tin. SD has actually done just what you suggest - they developed a workaround for nVidia cards but the drivers will only do so much so the transitions that look & work great on ATI rigs with the right drivers simply look crappy or don't work at all on nVidia rigs.

yeah Dave....don't know what got into Kona last night but signing off is, in most correspondence, whether memo or letterhead, the professional thing to do unless Kona finds these treads so linear it is redundant & un-necessary to do so in his opinion

Yeah, this is not an OT thread. You girls want to bicker about signatures on posts and you can take it somewhere else. What is it with you guys? What are you like 12?

It wouldn't be the first thing that doesn't work well on nVidia cards. This is one of the reasons why I like ATIs instead... and the fact that I get a new driver revision every month like clockwork.

I wonder if Neil has gotten a chance to test WB on that new laptop SD got.

My guess is that currently it may be 3.26 pm, Friday here...it's something like 11.26pm, Thursday there...

I work roughly 9 to 5-ish.... and if I were expected to be dealing with 'work issues' after midnight I'd be likely to be thumping people severely...

Now that's funny. I've mentioned this to them several times and other things by calling in. Never got a ticket of any kind. They simply state... I'm sure we'll get it fixed.

And it's Friday... not exactly the weekend yet. This has gone on long enough. Neil test the darn thing already... sheesh!

Typically in a support industry, if you don't have a case/ticket/whatever you can't expect to get the same level of service unless it's an easy fix that can be done right away.

If I'm a support tech, and I have a queue of users expecting support that was promised (implied) to them when they created the case, I'm going to work that queue. If I'm that tech and I'm not getting a response form a dev to resolve a problem . . . I'm going to apply pressure.

It seems to me that a post here in the community forum does not have the same weight as a case with Stardock.

It might be a good practice if Stardock is going to respond to the forum for a problem that a particular user is having that will take time and that only Stardock can resolve, they create a case.

But that's just me and my opinion. That and $4 will buy you voffee at Starbucks.

I am hoping to get the laptop tested soon but it is actually a machine thats in use by someone so its a matter of fitting in with their schedule.

Please remember that I am not tech support so its not uncommon for me to not read the forums for a few days. That doesn't mean I am sitting around doing nothing.
