Problems with IconPackager

I am having some problems changing my icons using IconPackager. First off the .zip file always defaults to .rar file setting. To change to a .zip icon after applying the icon pack, I then have to apply the icon I want to the .zip file extension manually. The second problem I have is that it will not skin the Internet Explorer Favorites menu. I have the option checked in Options. I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice now, but no effect. It did it in the past, but no longer does it. I am using IP 3.00i(

To fix your Explorer Favorites you should be able to simply reset back to the windows default icons and apply. Then re-apply your theme.

First off the .zip file always defaults to .rar file setting. To change to a .zip icon after applying the icon pack, I then have to apply the icon I want to the .zip file extension manually.

I have a similar problem with image files, but it's not IconPackagers fault. It's because the image files are associated with Paint Shop Pro, so whatever I have set as the pspimage file, is what I get for all the image files. Your problem is probably due to an association with your archive program.

To fix your Explorer Favorites you should be able to simply reset back to the windows default icons and apply. Then re-apply your theme.

Didn't work, I openned IconPackager, selected the very first icon set. Windows Default. Applied, looked at my desktop icons and they were are f'd up, blanks, etc. Then re-applied the icon package theme that I had saved and then opened IE and still had the default "Windows" icons within IE. I know this worked at one time but it no longer works. I checked my registry and under IconPackager the sub key Favorites = 1 so that can't be the problem. It is checked under Iconpacker options but it just doesn't apply them to my IE favorites. I am getting so sick and tired of all this crap from Stardock, ever since I bought all of it, I have spent more time trying to customize my computer than actually using it. I can't believe a company would put such crap products out that just don't work. If I could get my money back I would be happy to just remove all of this crap from my computer and be happy with just the Windows Default look. So any other suggestions on how to get my favorites icons skinned would be appreciated.

You might try this way:

1 - Start IconPackager > Settings > verify that you have "Apply package icons to Internet Explorer Favorites" selected > click "Apply" if needed > click "OK" to close and save.

2 - Start IconPackager > Tools > Restore all Icons > click "Yes" to confirm > click "OK" to apply.

2 - Start IconPackager again > Tools > Rebuild Icon Cache > click "Yes" to confirm > click "OK" to apply.

3 - Navigate to the "Favorites" folder for your account > open the folder > minimize to the taskbar.

4 - Start IconPackager > select the theme you want to apply > click the "Apply" button to apply > wait a few seconds for settings to take place.

5 - Restore the Favorites folder from minimized in taskbar to check for changes.

Note - I just tested this procedure with Mormegil's "Utopia (Canvas)" icon package, so it does work correctly.

I was really hoping that it would work, but all it accomplished is that when I am looking at the subfolders using explorer the icon I choose for folders show, but the URL's still are the default IE icon even though I have a specific icon specified for .url's in my theme. And then to top it all off, when I open Internet Explorer the icons in my link bar are still the default IE icons, so it half applies in regular explorer folder view and does not apply at all in Internet Explorer. I even tried to specify an icon for .lnk file in IconPackager to see if that would help and it tells me I cannot change the icon for this file type, but .lnk's are for programs and .url's are for Internet shortcuts, but it won't apply to .url. Now I can go through each individual .url links and change the icon but not using IconPackager, and besides all of that it doesn't apply within Internet Explorer. I know it did at one time, when I first installed but no longer does it, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice now. Very frustrating when all I am trying to do is make my computer look pretty, kinda of counter productive is you ask me. It shouldn't be this hard to make this stuff work right.

Please help me, I am getting ready to pull my hair out and I don't have that much to pull. I am actually ready to low-level my drive and wipe all this crap off of it and say goodbyre to it all, and just write it up as crap.

Calebrot, when changing your Internet Explorer favorites icons, IconPackager doesnt look at your .url configured icon. You must change Internet Document (.htm) icon. Select this to something else then hit apply and see what happens.

Ok, but no one has answered the .zip file reverting back to a .rar file and the icon staying as whatever package you unloaded, I have that SAME problem. I mean I know how to reset the icon manually in Windows, but I don't want to have to do that, anyone know why it does that?

OK, I have given myself a break, and uninstalled all Stardock products except for ObjectDock, caught up on using my PC for what it is designed for, and then when I was caught up, I reinstalled all of the Stardock products and decided to go with only release versions of the software. At first this worked except when I went to Repair Shell Icon Association for all processes, well that would reboot my computer on the release version of IconPackager, so I did upgrade to the latest beta. I am now able to skin the icons within Internet Explorer, but I have an icon defined for URL:File Protocol (.), .htm, .html, and .url. The same icon is defined for all of the four possible IE Links icons, but IconPackager places the icon for Microsoft Access as the url icon. I went and changed my Access icon, and it also changed the icons for URL's. This is driving me absolutely nuts. What is up with this. I have tried Repair for all processes, rebuild icon cache, repair icons and none of it works, still the Micro Access icon in my Internet explorer. Any ideas before I go bald?

I wish it were that simple. The newest beta build uses the .rar association for .zip files, not the .zip association as one would expect.

In IP if you change the icon for the .rar file type to the icon for the .zip file type and then apply the modified package, your .zip file icons will appear as expected in Windows Explorer.

My problem is fixed but I think it may have unearthed a problem with IconPackager. When I would load my IconPackage on the Files tab, I would switch from "default" to "By extension" view. Under "default" the file that is used for url's is the sixth icon in files, for .html. Well if you change the order to "By Extension" then the sixth icon is no longer .html, but IconPackager will still use whatever the 6th icon is in the list. In my case when applying a "By Extension" view, the sixth icon would be a Microsoft Access database file, and that is what I was getting in IE for url's. But when I changed to Default view the sixth icon under files is for .html so then all was correct. To me this is still a problem, IconPackager should be applying the icons by extension and not by the order they are in the .ini file, since it always applies the icon in the 6th position to IE Url's. I know this may be confusing, but I've dedicated myself to correcting this issue and it worked and that is how I found out about the 6th icon deal. If you are having the same or similar problems goto IconPackager, load your package, go to Icons and Cursors on left hand side of screen and then goto the files tab, right click and make sure you are in Default view, if your not change to it. Press Apply, and then close IconPackager and reopen, verify you are in default view and then reload and apply and it will work. This also fixes the issue with .zip defaulting to .rar, it doesn't if you apply in "Default"
