5. Objective & scope of the Project:
The project aims to study the extent of software piracy and other digital content piracy in India, the methods by which piracy is done, and also the common methods adopted by organizations to curtail piracy of their intellectual properties.
The project also aims at finding or developing softwares used for detecting digital content plagiarism.
The project also intends to make a comparative assessment of the legal framework for intellectual property rights protection in India, and a few other countries.
6. Brief outline of the project with specific technology fallouts

A. For texts, softwares which may have some or all of the following features

i) To detect various file formats used for standard public documents
like .pdf and .doc

ii) To convert the used file format (text) to a standard format for piracy analysis

iii) To normalize and compare the target documents and report number of
consecutive words, lines, paragraphs, pages, pixels etc. which overlap

iv) To analyse the above found overlap based on fair use provisions and
infringements clauses in the Copyright Law and generate a standard report
in respect of plagiarism or any other piracy made including its mechanism

v) Finally, development of a Computer Software tool to quantify overlap
of text and graphics in target documents and generate Copyright Alert
Reports.

B. For Computer Software Piracy

i) To study the feasibility of detecting various computer programming & scripting languages used in source code of popular software packages used by masses e.g. for works in (a) Office Automation, (

Advertising, (c) Architectural drafting (d) Internet/web transmission, (e) Hardware programming e.g. VHDL, Verilog etc.

ii) To document ways and methods used for their security and to detect
their piracy using possible standard disassemblers or developing tools of
that type

iii) To assess the current extent and methods of countrywide piracy
and its curtailment/security measures in India

iv) To suggest possible remedial measures so as to curtail present level of software piracy to an acceptable level in the next 3 years.

C. Comparative study of the legal framework regarding protection of Intellectual Property Rights protection of India, and a few other countries.

· Amrita Research Labs (ARL) is now well recognized for its leadership in hot new wireless technologies, namely WiFi (the IEEE 802.11x family of standards). One of the biggest drawbacks of wireless technologies today is security, and in solving them is where ARL has made great strides. Based on these inventions, ARL has created smart communication systems for a variety of next generation, high security, field deployments. In addition, innovative products such as the “Amrita Virtual Private Network” and the “Amrita Safe Lock”, have also received significant interest by several organizations around the globe.
Sky Bus is Konkan Railways’ futuristic high-tech transportation solution for metropolitan cities. Konkan had chosen Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham for developing the electronics for control, communication and anti-collision devices for its first Sky Bus test track.
· Amrita-BARC center for Advanced Research in Secure Data Acquisition and Networking was launched at Amritapuri campus by Director of BARC on February 1, 2004. Cutting edge research in areas like information security, secure operating systems and secure protocols are being carried out by scientists and engineers who have joined Amrita from reputed international companies such as Pacific Bell, Oracle, Sun, University of California, ATI etc.
· Further more, on May 15, 2004, the Amrita-BARC Center for VLSI Design and Development was launched at the Coimbatore Campus.
· As a result of the Satellite based education and research network, that we have set up in collaboration with ISRO, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is strategically positioned to lead the way in multi-disciplinary higher education, research, and technology innovation as they are applied to multitudes of disciplines and societal needs. Experts from academia and industry can interact live with the students and professors at different Amrita campuses.
The University has already undertaken several R & D projects earlier with organizations like ISRO, DRDO, BARC, NPOL, Konkan Railways, Ashok Leyland etc.

Holds experience of 15 years in teaching and research in computational sciences. Heading the Centre for excellence in Computational Engineering & Networking. Has conducted national level workshops in the area of Bioinformatics, high performance computing, data mining, wavelets and chaos theory, e-commerce technologies etc. Has undertaken three R&D projects for ISRO and NPOL. Has authored a book on “wavelets”. He has also contributed a chapter for a book published by Springer Verlag on “Reliability and safety analyses under fuzziness” in 1995. Two more books are to be released this year in the areas of data mining and high performance computing. Currently he is working on several computational approaches for protein fold prediction.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is always in the forefront to the support of Bioinformatics and Dr. Soman was the Organizing Secretary for the winter school for two weeks in December, 2003 which was sponsored by AICTE. During this workshop we used state-of-the-art opensource and freeware softwares like Darwin (Developed at University of Zurich, Switzerland). Dr. Soman has also developed several parallel algorithms that is applied in the areas of Bioinformatics.

The chief investigator is working in the field of high performance computing, Computer security for the past several years and is currently guiding many M.Tech and PhD candidates in these areas and also is working for several funded projects. He will devote 50% of his time for this project.
The co-investigators have teaching commitments in the MBA programme of the Amrita School of Business, and other some administrative responsibilities. They will devote 60% of their time for this project.

iii).Brief Project Summary : This project aims at developing parallel algorithms for target identification using support vector machines. The novelty of the algorithm lies in adaptive incremental learning in which algorithm adapt to new data sets.

2. Detailed description of the Project : The project aims to study the extent of software piracy and other digital content piracy in India, the methods by which piracy is done, and also the common methods adopted by organizations to curtail piracy of their intellectual properties.
The project also aims at finding or developing softwares used for detecting digital content plagiarism.

Note: The search engine being developed by us as part of the project identifies the similar documents and brings them to our server where it is analyzed for finding the extent of similarities. This involves a huge computing power since there can be large number of documents to be searched for both text and graphics data. This process requires a parallel or grid computing platform. Hence the cost of the capital equipment comes to Nine Lakhs.

Ph.D. in Globalization, Higher Education, and Labor Markets (2004).
University of California at Berkeley, U.S.A.

- An Interdisciplinary Ph.D. with Economics, Sociology, and Higher Education as my three major fields. In my doctoral research, I explore and analyze the incidence, timing, and career outcomes of returning home for foreign students who receive their doctoral degrees in the United States. Based on a unique and richly detailed micro-level dataset, my work is one of the first analyses of the actual career histories of foreign-born US Ph.D.s, both those who returned and those who stayed back in the US. Complementing in-depth econometric analysis with qualitative description, I focus on the crucial choice to immigrate/ return home. Specifically I investigate the factors influencing the incidence and timing of return, and the subsequent career outcomes, such as income and job satisfaction, more than a decade after the completion of the Ph.D. I situate my work in the larger context of the international migration of skilled labor at a time of an increasing globalization of knowledge, cultures and economies—a phenomenon sometimes referred to as the "Brain Drain”, and an issue of increasing relevance and importance to national education and labor policy determination.

- Currently serving as Associate Professor at Amrita School of Business (ASB). The courses I have taught or co-taught include International Business, International Marketing, Consumer Behavior, and Marketing Management. Graduate Student Researcher (GSR).

- Art Historians…Ten Years Later (2001-2002): This research project, funded by the Getty foundation, surveyed the post-Ph.D. job and family histories of Art History Ph.D.s in the US, a decade or so after they graduated. The research responsibilities, while I was involved with the project, involved the conceptualization, creation, analysis, and maintenance of the survey data. A unique facet of this project was the comprehensive use of the Internet to collect, analyze, and disseminate the data online. The statistical program SAS was used extensively in this work.

- PhD’s…Ten Years Later (1997-2001): This important and unique national survey covered around 3700 Ph.D.s from 6 fields and 61 universities across the United States (see referred publication). The research work was multi-faceted. A key responsibility was the use of SAS programming to create, manage, and analyze a comprehensive dataset involving different elements of post-Ph.D. career histories and subjective retrospective evaluations of the doctoral experience. Auxiliary responsibilities included the development of statistical weights for the data analysis, and the analysis and writing of a National Science foundation (NSF) funded research report on the relative outcomes of those in the data who were awarded NSF pre-doctoral fellowships.

- An Analysis of Commuter Choice Behavior (1995-1996): The research work involved an econometric analysis of survey data on the factors influencing commuter departure times using data collected in Brussels, Belgium. The research on commuter flexibility in travel times is a key component of policy research on traffic congestion in Transportation studies. Micro-economic consumer behavior models were fitted using the Multinomial Probit framework (see referred publication). The statistical programs LIMDEP and SPSS were used in this work.

- Taught sections in a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses both at the Business school and the Economics department during the period 1991-1996. The courses were: Introductory Economics; International Business; Strategic Planning; and Marketing Research. The responsibilities as a GSI included regular lectures to complement class-room material, weekly individual and group discussions with students, and evaluation and grading of the students problem sets, papers, and exams.

Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology (CAPART), India.

- Advised CAPART, a Government of India agency that is responsible for the allocation of resources towards the dissemination of appropriate and rural technology, on the development of a marketing program for rural arts and crafts. The work included primary market research with village based Non-Government Organizations (NGO's) and independent artisans.

- Planned, implemented, and controlled the sales of Pond's products in specified geographical locations in the Southern and Eastern parts of India. A market leader in personal products in India, Pond's (India) was then a subsidiary of Chesebro Pond’s (US). Apart from considerable responsibility, the job also offered a lot of flexibility in operations with an active encouragement of individual initiative. It was an excellent learning ground in sales planning and management.

Appendix – A

Software piracy has been a major problem that the software manufacturers were facing in the recent days. There are quite a number of organisations working in India like NASSCOM, who attempts to identify the software piracy and stop this. Another serious issue that we face is the piracy in the digital media and the intellectual property rights. The books authored and other digital data unless it is protected and a piracy or plagiarism identified quickly, we may not be able to protect the intellectual property rights of the author. We as part of this project, attempt to develop software that will enable to identify these in a short span of time.

Our objective is to help position India as a trusted source of digital data through a process of engagement, education, enactment and enforcement with a strong focus on IP protection and robust legislative framework, through implementing an efficient method to identify the piracy in digital media and preventing it.

The idea is to have a culture of digital security, cyber security and safety. We will recommend how to harmonise the piracy laws in our country and elsewhere too so that any attempt to violate the copyrights policy and digital piracy can be identified and the level of piracy determined.

Methodology intended to be adopted:

I) Secondary search
Secondary search will include information gathering from the sources given below.
1) Existing studies available with the central government ministries, state governments, research institutions etc.
2) Research papers from journals, magazines etc.
3) Internet search
4) Search for and audit any existing software for detecting plagiarism.
5) Study the legal framework for intellectual property rights protection in India, and a few other countries.

II) Indepth Interviews
We plan to interview:
1) Experts in this area from Government agencies
2) Research students from IITs and other leading institutions
3) Persons working in the IT security field
4) Retailers selling pirated software (students can be used to contact and get details from them)
5) Consultants who are users of pirated software
6) Experts in hacking
7) Household PC users
In these studies, we may have to hide the identity of the respondents

To the chairman and the members of " IPR Advisoy committee of DIT"

With the growth of the Internet and increasing volume of computer software products Plagarism of the digital contents and piracy of the computer software need to be controlled / curtailed. IPR cell DIT , on getting representation from industry association("FICCI" Delhi), took up this issue with an expert group / centre of excellence in Computational Engineering and Networking , "Amrita Vishva Vidyapeetham , Ettimandai,Coimbatore - 641105 to evolve methods and tools suitable for detection of Plagarism in digital content and piracy of computer softwares. Working jointly the enclosed propsal with total outlay of Rs. 41.92 lakhs over a period of two years has been evolved.

2. The proposal after discussion in DIT and with the chairman on 18th.3.05 , is posted herewith for able comments of expert members of the IPR Advisory Committee to record their comments/views/recommendatons for DIT funding.

plagiarism present today.
#. The proposal targets text based and binary s/w (I assume binary)
piracy/plagiarism.
#. The objective is to bring out tools which will assist in tracking down
the problems mentioned in the proposal.

My Comments

#. The proposal's main stay is the study on the various techniques involved
in these problems but specific mention as to how this study will be
better than various literature already available in form of books,
whitepapers, etc.would have enabled to understand the proposal still better.
#. The software is good for text plagiarism but any mention of how s/w
piracy will be tracked using standard debugger etc.may pl be mentioned
#. There already exists host of anti-piracy mechanisms like "Microsoft's
Product Activation Technology", "FLEXnet Software Based Licensing", "Aladdin
HASP Technology", etc. The proposal does not clarify whether it will just
study or also propose a new mechanism to prevent, track and expose these
problems.
# Mention of Schedule( quarterly/half yearly timelines) with milestones and deliverables would enable better appreciation of proposal. suggest to incorporate the same.
# Breakup of budget/cost estimates ( salary, equipments, overhaead etc..) may pl be mentioned.
# suggested countries for comparative study of copyright legal framework/laws prevailing in different countries are japan,china,germany,singapore besides usa and europe
