Tsunami

I'm having a good time on the web and PSP9 tonight, but I can't help thinking of the over 100,000 lives lost and all of the homeless people in the areas hit by this disaster. Soon to be many diseases because of the bodies (which are not bodies but peoples loved ones). Already a world of emotional and physical pain for so many. If you think of it, take a minute to pray for those that remain and those in the cleanup effort.

On NPR I heard an interview with a UN relief official who said it was going to take years and billions (yeah, with a of dollars to clean everything up and repair the infrastructure and everything else. Pray indeed.

I just saw that the death toll is nearing 150,000. US just bumped it's aid from 35 million to 350 million. What a disaster! Anyone know of an avenue of giving (monetary or physical) that would get channeled to help in some way?

While I don't have any specific links, the International Red Cross would be a good place to start.

I feel sorry for them......but this is kinda weird-no animal carcases were found. Maybe they have a sixth sence!!!???

In a gesture I think is fantastic ...about a third of the 600 or so tour operators in my locale are donating today's takings to the Red Cross tsunami relief fund.

And last night, they (Red Cross) were wheeling around a giant enclosed wheelbarrow (one, upside-down on top of the other, and locked together) and collecting from revellers. When I spoke with them, they said they had already emptied it back at base five times. It was only 8pm, and they were collecting till 1am or so.

...think of a wheelie-bin ...it would hold about the same volume as the wheelbarrow did. Folk's in this area ...tourist's and locals alike, really dug deeply.

Kinda makes you proud that people can be so generous when others are in dire need

Amazon.com has a link on their front page to make a donation to the Red Cross through them, in case anyone is a regular Amazon customer.

This has to be the most horrific natural disaster in modern history. I still almost can't even begin to comprehend it. I'm not surprised to hear it will take years for the region to recover....

Great idea to both pray and give: puts "feet" on our words and intentions...

One of our IT guys had some home video footage from the tsunami [no, I don't know where he got it] but it was terrible. At first, the people were excited about the "big wave", laughing and getting closer for pictures and video footage. It continued with more excited and cheers, then all of a sudden they realized they were in big trouble and the cheers changed to screaming and confusion and everyone started to run, then the footage cut out.

I also listened to testimonies of survivors on NPR. Desperately holding on to an elderly relative's hand only to watch them being carried away, choosing between saving one child or another and on & on it went....

What hurts me the most is that we can help but can never make them whole again: some things are not replaceable no matter how hard we try....
