Moved my Desktop to the D drive - big mistake?

Hi All,

My C drive was running out of space, so I moved my downloads folder and Desktop files to the D drive (I did this through Windows Explorer, using the MOVE function - which is the correct way - I did not simply move the folder).

Rebooted, and of course now, all my icons are outside of the fences, scattered all over the desktop.

Is there an easy way to correct this? Or do I have to manually drag all the icons back into their proper fence? (which would be a pain since I have over a hundred).

Thanks for any direction.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

I'm not really sure on this one but give " Snapshot " a try then REBOOT , if that doesn't work for you,

you might have to manually place them back as you said .

Get yourself a new external drive...you can get 4 terrabytes for about $100...move your folder back to C Drive...problem solved. When you moved your folder you broke the path to your icons and anything else you had linked to that folder.

@webgizmos - an external drive will not help the C Drive space issue - if it can, I'm not sure how...I have plenty of room on the D drive, which is why I moved it there.

Also, when you "move" the system folders as I did, you do not break any links - all the icons work. As I mentioned, I did not just move the folder manually - I used the system "move" option which you can do for the desktop, downloads, pictures, etc....

The only "links" I broke was with fences somehow. So I guess at this point I will need to manually move them back. But I appreciate the replies!

When you run out of space on an OS drive the LAST THING you should consider moving is OS-System files, no matter how MS 'thinks' it is an option....and provides the 'move' function for them.

It's simply bad practice to involve multiple drives in an OS 'installation'.

Even Stardock provides a proggy to look into what's on a drive/taking up space ..... 'Spacemonger'.

I'd suggest checking that out and see what really CAN/should be moved......

While I agree moving "system files" is never a good idea, your "user" folders are made to be placed anywhere.

I've resolved the issue by manually putting the icons back into their proper fence.
