The main issue that SOME people have with Bryce is that it has a very easy INITIAL learning curve and then it runs through the roof. It is very easy for a beginner to make a passable picture within 20 minutes of firing up the program for the first time. I have been using Bryce since 2.0 and I love it for it ease of use and it's advanced abilities (Deep Texture Editor) that no other software under 1000.00 dollars can match. As far as I'm concerned you can make crap with any software is a 16 year old with a Warez copy of 3DSMax better than 16 year old that saved up his 150 bucks and purchased Bryce? I think that Deadman is working hard at improving his abilities and if he keeps working at it who knows he might end up being as good as the folks that I linked to above. Or he could be like me that keeps trying but will probably never ever be that good, and never submit anything that I make.

So before you relegate Bryce to a "Filter" program, know of what you speak.

I have uploaded and passed moderators' approvals exactly two things in my two years of being part of the skinning community. One was a crappy skin for a notepad...the other was a bryce rendition done with a trial version. In the end, I couldn't justify the expense and haven't done anything with Bryce since. It took me right up to the last of the 30 days I had to get the image I ended up with, and it was for a friggin wallpaper, uploaded to skinz.org a long time ago.

All the rest of the Bryce work I did trying to get to that point (until the license ran out) I have vegitating on the hard drive, since I know it all sucks. Doesn't mean I'll never get around to haveing a few hundred extra bucks laying around later so I can get the software, but if the community doesn't appreciate it anyways, and you don't do it professionally, then hell, what's the use of putting the effort into it? If you are the only one who appreciates your own work, it gets old quick. People are usually communal, and want to be accepted and appreciated.

Don't go slapping people around if you don't intend to alienate them. Some of us won't bother slapping back...we'll just go get our damn gun and shoot yer ass (Texans excluded...they do this constantly for no apparent reason [j/k]). Others may just shut their mouths and disappear.

To me Bryce isn't a style like "Oh, that's cubism" or "Oh, that's Impressionism", it's more akin to making model cars. Sure, one hundredth of one percent of people who make plastic model cars do insanely intricate work, molding their own parts, creating their own bodies, etc, but the rest are pretty much just gluing stuff together that they get out of a box. Would it be reasonable to spend hundreds of hours recreating from scratch a snap-together model? It would be like a 3 star chef spending a hundred hours learning to exactly duplicate a Big Mac. Sure, he could do it, and it would take skill, but what would he end up with? The same thing that a 16 year-old can throw together in 5 minutes. That is Bryce. As Kinrik stated so well, why waste your time?

Art isn't about making something look professional, it is about individual expression through a medium. Bryce is about making things look professionally created without all the hassle of doing it from scratch. The only Bryce artists who display "style" are those that I really can't tell are using Bryce. Once they discard all the premade stuff, transend the program, they seem to find a decent, affordable, modelling program. More power to them. Anything short of that, though, isn't going to get a lot of respect, and it really shouldn't.

deadman, if you are making your own meshes and textures, I salute you. I would, however, suggest you break out of the 'mountains-and-water' genre so that people can recognize your labor.

You can tweak it to look more natural, but that's advanced stuff.

there are numerous tutorials out htere for Bryce, as well...try getting into non-nature settings in a real-life scenario....like a city street or something. Also, even the best have trouble. Notice Gorg's links to the one guy doing the bonsai trees? All of the bark on the trees angles straight up, instead of *with* the curve of the trunk...just some more to practice on, even for the *really good* artists...

I mean, come on...Adni is a great artist, but look at the creations (a big handful, not all)...Bryce and Photoshop...over and over and over. Some people get off on that, but to me (MY DAMN OPINION) it is similar to the default Bryce work everyone pumps out daily. And yet, there they are, averaging 700+ downloads a day...

So people like the same abstract 3D multi-layered glassy-with-varying-shades-of-transparency effect with some random quasi-elemental shading or randomized color shceme skinning something in the background over and over again...more power to them.

I don't hear a single complaint...or *constructive criticism* sent Adni's way for all the repetition, though.

And like I said, it is my opinion. I mean no offense to Adni or his work. Just stating what I see going on, and that I, personally, have this view point. I ain't complaining. If I was going to, about someone's work, I'd do it in their comments section.

Another two cents...hell, if I keep this up froggy can afford a cup of coffee...
