I would think that advertising is important for a site and the advertiser then they would design the ads to look and work better. Flashier ands are not the answer. Google came up with Ad Words. Sometimes all you need is words. Sometimes images. Ads should be entertianing.

I saw an ad for either target or best buy that was a flash movie and it loaded in the backround. I heard this noise and I was like "what the... " and saw this TV like ad. It was so funny. I played it 3 times.

I think internet ads should be the way to adverise. it is so easy to click and see. but if they are going to be lame and stupid and un-entertaining then we will ignore it just like junk mail.

I think I have an idea.... a plan.

I understand the need for ads. They just do not have to be so unthoughtful and stupid. I really believe that not so many people would be sick of them if they were better and more entertaining.

Well, yeah. Lots of TV commercials are entertaining - sometimes more so than the shows. Computer ads are, for the most part ignored because they aren't entertaining - just irritating. Flashing ads you don't even see after a while.

What about those pop-under ads? How can this possibly be selling anything? I close them without even seeing them. I don't get the point of pop-unders at all!

pop ups can be profitable... if it contains something. I usually close the window too before seeing the ad (sometimes I do no bother). But now that I have seen ACTUALLY goo pop up, pop under, Z order ads... I feel that they do not have to be lame. They just do not put any (ANY) thought into them what so ever.except for the fact that it links to there site.

excatly.... it is called name reconition (I think).... I just find myself very upset about this. It is like they are just not getting the point. The common thought is that TV is better because it has more "animation" and "features". It is not better, it is different. News ads all across the world pay for advertising in newspapers. That is flat and definatly not animated. Posters are not animated. Billboards are not animated (well some of them are).

I guess the dot-com buble really messed things up. It will be years before a "on-line" business will be mainstream as well as advertising.

When I worked full-time as a Web Designer, we had this new guy start who came from a completely print-based background.

I have no idea what he told the Directors to get the job, but somehow they employed him as a Web Designer on a salary 50% higher than mine.

I was then told that I needed to train this guy to do Web Design because it turned out he lacked any of the basic skills. I'm sure you can imagine my feelings about this, but I set about making a detailed training plan which would cover all the most important stuff in the shortest space of time.

When it came down to actually teaching him, he was as uncooperative as a person can be. I persisted though, despite my concerns, and my growing unease with the fact that this guy was being paid 50% more than me despite the fact he knew nothing.

Then one day my patience came to an end. He called myself and the IT Manager over to his desk because he was concerned about something on his screen. It turned out that while he had been surfing the net, he had come across a page with one of those banners which looks like a Windows dialog box containing the words 'Your Internet connection is not fully optimized. Click OK to download the necessary software updates'. Of course, he had clicked on it. He wanted to know how to download the software so that his computer would start working correctly again.

Suffice to say the IT Manager's face went decidedly pale. I promptly went to the Director and handed in my resignation. I had no desire to work for a company that would hire such an idiot and then expect me to train him to do my job.

A month after my departure, the idiot in question was fired.

Advertising works just fine folks...
