Can't upgrade to Windows 7 'cause of WindowBlinds 6 (won't uninstall)

I can't get Windows 7 to install on my work PC, and that is a big problem for me since I can't do my work. The upgrade process keeps saying that WindowBlinds 6 is incompatible and needs to be uninstalled. I did uninstall it, but I guess there's remnants around. How do I clean this up? I need to get my work going or possibly no longer have work. I did download a utility from Stardock but it was no help. I started using OD back when it was an OS/2 beta. Never thought I'd have an issue like this.

I did install WindowBlinds 7 and then did an uninstall of it to see if it would clean anything up. My control panel no longer shows any version of WindowBlinds installed, however I still can't install Windows 7. Still getting the incompatibility error. Thanks.

Do you have vista on right now?

If so, start panel > accesories > command Prompt(right click choose run as administartor) then sfc /scannow

Download and run CCleaner.  It does a good job of removing program traces of uninstalled programs.

I'm not an expert here and you said you downloaded a program from SD so this may be the same one.

This is only what I would try and not telling you to do it. I would install WB again then you the removal tool. There is a program called odnt_zapper.exe. I have it but don't know how to add it here for you. Maybe it's the one you already have.

CCleaner will work or you can download Revo uninstaller. Set that to moderate and it'll clean everything out.

Thanks for the help.  I have tried all these things and nothing works.  Still can't install Windows 7.  Maybe 7 is looking at something other than the registry.

Another swing and a miss!  Great try though.   This is really, really upsetting me.  I need to upgrade this PC, and it's looking like I'll only have the option of a clean install.  I have lots of work stuff that I don't think will re-install nice if I do that.

As I mentioned earlier I did try to use the odnt_zapper.  It does not show anything in the uninstall. The unload has WebBlinds.  I ckick it, select Apply, and it goes away.  Then when I click refresh it is back.  Am I doing it wrong?

Open Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Stardock\

Delete any WindowBlinds reference in either key (the second key will most likely be the culprit).

Re-boot back into Windows. Try upgrade.

 

 

Failing that:

Install Window Blinds 7, re-boot back into Windows. Try upgrade.

Thanks.  No luck.  I had already scanned the registry and removed any WindowBlinds references.  That didn't help.  Though I do wonder if maybe there are abbreviations for WB in the registry.  So-called uninstallers are not help.  CCleaner is not help.

Installing WindowBlinds 7 didn't do it either.  I now have it installed and yet Windows 7 still complains about WindowBlinds 6.

Something else is going on....if it's not in the registry, Windows is as dumb as a rock. How exactly are you doing the Vista 64 bit to 7 64 bit upgrade?

 

Run: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor see what it comes up with.

It's 32bit.  The advisor takes inclredibly long, I've had to kill it.  When I say long, I mean hours.  I think it gets hung.

The advisor ran this time and does not say anything about WindowBlinds.  Strange.  Very strange.

Thought it was Vista Ultimate 64 bit ....oh well, doesn't matter.

The Advisor should take minutes, not hours. What is it that you have to save on this machine, 'cause it appears this install of Vista is trashed? You can do a clean install of Win 7 using an upgrade license.

The fact that all the other suggestions failed to work, I'd suggest that something else was going on.  Sorry that you are having to do a full install but your system is better for it in any case.  Upgrades often leave crap behind that bite you later.
