Microsoft has changed the way booting is done with Vista. You get two options: the standard Vista boot with the progress bar (known as GUI Boot) or a static image (No GUI Boot). There is even a standard image that Microsoft has included with Vista called Aurora that you can see if you run msconfig, go to the Boot tab, check the "No GUI Boot" option, and then restart. If there is a safe way to hack the GUI Boot, it hasn't been discovered yet from what I can tell.
