It can depend on what you're doing. Another way is to set activation to none.(Relation tab|Activation).

My main concern was to prevent the individual objects from being moved independently of the whole. If I grabbed the main body part and dragged it, everything else moved with it, but I didn't realize I could grab the glass and move it off the main body part.

Putting everything in a group seems to have fixed that.

Its always a good idea to group things together if possible, but sometimes things are grouped inside other things, and that can complicate it more. I like using the locked or no activation methods as well, use them more and more these days.

Grouping them is the way I typically get them all to move as one unit:)
