My default logons are in Stardock/DefaultLogons.

Interestingly,the logon screen that I am using is not listed in this folder.

It is in my Pictures folder. I think Windows must be picking it up from this folder

What does WB mean.

No, I haven't unistalled LogonStudio - Just trying to find out if the login screen created is dependent upon keeping Logonstudio on the machine.

As a matter of interest, I deleted an image in logonstudio. It did not go to the Recycle Bin. What happened to it?

I am not really sure how Logonstudio works. I created and saved an image, then applied it. But what actaully happens?

The small logon picture can be changed in Control Panel/User Accounts.

I believe the logon files themselves are stored in a .dll or some new format not accesable to the user...I haven't really heard a full explanation yet... but they are not in any folder.

If you want to uninstall Logon Studio, although I'm not sure why you would, it's best to set it back to the default logon to avoid possible problems in the future.

Are you talking about the User image that appears on the Vista logon screen (In my case the default was a chess board)?

Vista will ALWAYS show the user image.  There is no way to disable it.

You can try a few things though . . . a transparent image?  A crop of your logon screen that blends into the screen?

In regards to knowing how LogonStudio works . . do you ask how notepad works?  Or do you just use it?    THe developers know how it works, but we here are just users.  Sorry.

When you create a logon, the image you specify is copied to an area of your disk (C:\ProgramData\Stardock\LogonStudio Vista\Logons). You can modify the original but it will not affect the saved copy. You can modify the copy, but you should not make changes that affect its name or size.

When you apply a logon, certain system image resource files are modified to contain a copy of the image. Most of the complexity of LogonStudio comes in doing this automatically in a way that doesn't result in a security breach. The end result is a resource file that has the pre-existing security applied but with your custom logon screen rather than the default.

If you delete a logon in LogonStudio Vista, that removes the files associated with the logon from your computer. It does not remove it as the current logon screen - once applied, the images are loaded from the resource file. However, if you uninstall LogonStudio, the uninstall code will be triggered and the logon screen will be reverted to the default from a system backup, just as if you had double-clicked the default logon screen.

Using an built-in logon screen is similar, except that LogonStudio Vista does not maintain a separate copy of the image file. These logon definition files contain a reference to the existing image files. If the files concerned do not exist, the logon will not be offered. One built-in logon that will not be displayed on several computers is Media Center, as that only comes with certain editions of Windows Vista.

The user image is defined by each user and is not modified by LogonStudio Vista. You can try to set a totally transparent user picture by clicking on it in the Start menu and selecting to "Change my picture" - however, this does not appear to work, instead resulting in a white image. It is likely that removing this would require editing the layout description file, which LogonStudio Vista does not currently attempt.

Now I know... don't try it.

It appears to be something written into the Vista code. It's not possible to make the userpic transparent in XP logons either.

Since this is a fresh thread I will ask a related question.

Can we take a logon screen that was created in LogonStudio, and distribute it to another user to put on their machine without them having LogonStudio installed?

Just want to know if I have to have my friends download the software. Believe me when I say I am encouraging them to do so already.

Due to the way Windows has decided to do things, the end result is a 15MB file which contains images for various Windows functions. This is somewhat unlike the XP world where LogonUI.exe was a 500k file - 2MB at most even if you stuck a huge JPG in there. It would not be a good idea to distribute this on bandwidth grounds, even if your friends could install it - a process which requires non-trivial knowledge of how to manage security permissions.

You would also be redistributing part of Microsoft's work, which is against their copyright and something we at Stardock work hard to try to avoid.
