I Need Your Computer Help!

ok so I bought a computer game and I really want to play it but I'm having some trouble installing it. It's by Sierra and it's called Shivers and it's from like 1995, so its pretty old, but also pretty bad ass lol. When I put the cd into the computer the auto load doesn't finish. A screen will pop up and ask if I want to install, but then nothing happens. I've also tried going into the cd drive (D) and starting the installation process from there but it doesn't work. I can click on one icon and get the game to play, but I can't save. If anyone knows anything that could help me out I'd appreciate it, thanks guys!

You've not said what system you're running - if it's Windows XP then try using compatibility mode....

yes it is windows XP, i tired changing the compatibility to windows 95, but I did it through my cd drive, do I have to do it somewhere else?

Re Compatibility Mode. Open the drive window so that you can see the setup file, right click on the setup file, select properties and follow the instructions in the guide.

"This is a infamous problem with the systems test part of the Sierra installers. Just skip the system test. It will give you the chance to install, anyway. "
About the only thing I could find that might help....
Otherwise it's gonna need DosBox .....it seems to be a problem game...

The links do offer an alternative route. One suggestion is to use an emulator like DOSBox, alongside Windows 3.1 and create the environment for Shivers to run in.

It's not an arena I've played in myself, so I couldn't say how well it would work, or how much work is involved.

A quick look at Google suggests the information and resources are available.

If you have enough disc space/system resources. Depending on your back-up/image restore options, you might consider creating a virtual XP environment or perhaps a working snapshot with something like FD-ISR. Then at least you can experiment within these without adversely affecting your 'mission critical' installation.

Sure does, I was only using one....

..... FWIW the real reason for the crosspost is that midway through, I thought to take a look over at Virtualbox to see if it would accept DOSBox. It had a ticket on it until the latest version of Virtualbox, that would have made it a bad bet. Looks as if they might work together now.

ok.

it's just so weird becuase I can click on one icon and it will run the game perfectly except it won't let me save. I think it must not be on my computer and I'm just playing from the disc...or something. I'll look into whatever those dos box things are and see if that will help. I don't know much about computers, so it's hard lol.

Yes, that'll be the case.

One thing you might want to try....copy the entire CD to your harddrive.....then go int file/properties for all the files in the directory and check they are not 'r' [read only]...then try running it from that folder....you 'may' just be able to save then....

Not sure if this is any help.

I to had a game from Sierra (half-life) the first one.. and it would not install on my
XP Pro. and later on I had to re-install XP. so I tried to install Half-life again before
installing SP2 and I was able to install the game.

Note: this is the only game i have from Sierra and it is the only one that will not install IF I Have SP2 Update on my computer First.

So in short if all els fails try reinstalling XP or if you can REMOVE SP2 then install the game then put SP2 on..

SP2 = service Pack 2
