17" + laptops

they do have a market.

Hi, My Name is Mark im from Manchester UK. Loving the show, I have a comment on you guys saying there is no market for big laptops. I like to go to LKn Partys. I dont use my laptop for much else, I just Lan partys for gaming. I have a 17" Dll Inspiron 9300 with 6800go graphics, it is perfect for takign to lan partys on public transport, and powerfull enoguh to play all the games. I will be looking to upgrade it in the future to bring it in line with my desktop machine. I will definatly concider a 20" laptop when I upgrade, I like a nice big screen and would like one with me at Lans. I know of other people who use 17"+ laptops for the same thing, and as this laptops with beefy graphics arent very upgradable, they get replaced every 12-24 months. Hence there is a market for them. Also they woudl apeal to students who want a 20" desktop system, and want to take it away to univercity with them and just have it on theri desk ther eand take it home after term etc. Thanks for Reading.

I do agree that there is a market for this but not for the price that Dell is asking for. I do think that a better solution might be laptops that don't have hard drives installed but instead have flash memory. Then have a central networked hard drive that can be accessed and logged in like unix systems. Making a lighter laptop with more battery life. Also by centralizing the hard drive all files can be secured and accessable by all terminals "laptops". Also internet could be accessable from the laptop without the hard drive like KNOPPIX. Files then can be transfered from flash memory scanned and then transfered to the central hard drive. Yeah maybe this has already been done and might be too much to this simple questions but ten years from now we will find out I guess. Of course this is just an off the top of my head idea so don't take it to heart.

Did you know that there are spell checkers that cost nothing? It's true! You can "Google" spell checkers to find some! (Google toolbar is free too!)

Actualy I do know, I just dont care, I slapped the post up in about 10 second because I only had 10 sconds.

I also realise its possible to split up into paragraphs somehow on this forum software which I am not used to, but once again, dont care didnt have time, just wanted to get my opinion across.

Ace2000 Thats an interesting view on it, to be honest in 10 years we will probably have 200gig compact flash cards or similar, so the dumb terminal model wouldnt be needed then.

Yeah in ten years from now I could image the things we won't have to worry about at all but we will see. My main problem as well with everyone else is that computers are not secure when they are connected to the internet. Although I haven't had a virus in quite sometime, like 2 years, I have to waste time keeping up with all the automatic updates and clean up utilities just to do work. I also don't have the luxury of two computers just yet to have one be a internet terminal and the other my development platform. Hopefully Vista will fix this for sometime.

The problem with the big laptops is evident after you've had one for a few years. I've had a Sony Vaio A-690 for around 2 years. I can see it from where I'm sitting but I don't use it much anymore.

It has 256mb ATI Radeon video card and will run Doom3 reasonably well. The native resolution is 1920x1200 which means I need a magnifying glass to read most text. The other problem has to do with heat. I use mine for work and it needed to be able to put in 12-14 hour days. That much usage is more than what it seems built for. I'm currently on my third motherboard and now out of warranty (that's why it's just sitting there) I talked with the tech in San Diego the last time it was in for repair and he said this was a common problem on the bigger laptops.

It still has it's uses but they're very limited and considering the $3000 price tag......I'll go with the cheapy next time.

But you use it for work, you dotn fit into the market i was talking about in my original post.

Besides you bought a sony, all sony products are over rated and over priced

Well, I just got my Dell XPS M1710 and it is fabulous! I love the fact that I have the technology of a primo gaming system in a portable package, and the screen is seriously sweet.

I use my laptop as my email checker, accessible as my fourth monitor via Multiplicity Pro when on my desktop, and yet always ready to travel with my email on hand.

Once it is no longer viable to travel with (re: I get a new laptop), I will probably use this old one as another monitor for my main system using MaxiVista.
