ico icons

What is the difference between the ico & png icons & how do I use a ico icon

I noticed there are ico icons in the object doc & Misc. icon downloads.
There seems to be a mix of png & ico icons & the ico icons seem to be a lot smaller but larger in file size. To change icons in object doc, I know I just need to use one of the png files I download or created in icon developer.
I have no idea what to do with these little ico icons that I have downloaded. Can someone explain them to me and how i would apply, where I would apply and how & why I would use them. The only thing I can find on them is that they exist and can be created with icon developer. I can find nothing on their use or purpose.
It simply says a ico is the format of the windows icons which means really tells me nothing. It is great that the window icon is a ico or icl file, but that means nothing if I do not understand how to use, apply or or even where to apply them.

Dunno that much about it all, but, 'til someone more knowledgeable jumps in here, I'll share what little I know:
I seem to be able to only use the .png ones in OD+, while the .ico seems to be what Icon Packager uses, .icl being the suffix for an icon library that's incl. in an Icon Packager theme.

ie: if I want to change an icon of something on, say, my desktop, I can find it in Start>My Computer>C:\>Program Files>Stardock>Icon Packager>Themes. Change the "Types of Files" from "Icon Files" to "All Files", and the .icl will show as well as the IP file. Click on the .icl file and you'll see all the icons in that theme.

I just use 'em, tho, and don't create, yet, so remember: "Advice is cheap...it's taking it that can get expensive..."
