I never did see the point of photorealism, although it's impressive he got the textures and whatnot on the computer.

Well, it's a fairly impressive image but at the same time the whole deal sounds like an insane waste of time and effort. I mean... if you want to do images like this, why do it in Photoshop? Why not a 3D program? That ought to be much easier and the end result would probably be a lot more convincing. But then again I might be missing the point... maybe it isn't supposed to be "easy".

The point? Because he can and because he probably likes it. Same as people asking why peolpe bother using weeks and months on making a skin.

Why do it at all? People are just going to rag on you for doing it anyways.

Who care how he did it, right? I thought it was all about supporting the community, to express themselves any way they like and use any tools they feel comfortable with.
I guess not today.

Why skin? All you need is a camera, right? Sheesh....

To clarify....he's used a huge image res.....and made it all so intricate but over-complicated with layers,etc....and in so doing has lost overall clarity/continuity of scale and perspective, a problem when the screen is too small for the image as a whole.

More effort should have gone into sketching for scale and proportion.

The one flaw in perspective I see in that first image is on the brick building on the right. Looking at the top left of the building, the corner seems off. Other than that looks pretty good.

I don't get all the bashing. I've seen plenty of stuff posted here and on DA that is nowhere near as good, yet everyone falls all over themselves telling the author how good it is.
I used to watch Burt Monroy on the old Screen Savers as well, the guy is incredibly talented.

Of course, from the looks of this thread, Photoshop isn't considered a valid medium here anymore.

I don't get all the bashing

It's not 'bashing', it's critical comment by those who may not be as 'wowed' by effort expended as by results shown.

Photoshop is as poor a tool as any other.  Being sufficiently anal to detail to the n'th degree is all well and good but if the direction is less than perfect so will be the outcome.

[I am also my sister's hashest critic....though it was she, not me that was 'hung' for the Archibald Prize this year [Australia's premier 'contest' for portraiture]]...

The perspective in this isn't all that bad... my credit to him goes out for both shear size of it (40"x20" the size of an actual painting), hours spent, and attention to detail. Digital painting is a true pain in the arse. Overall he has done a really good job folks.

The reason? Why even question that... photoshop is just another medium, like paint, pencil, plaster, photography, and so on.... asking why is like saying why paint at all when there are cameras (which actually has been in debate off and on in the art world since cameras were introduced, more or less its impact but still). Just my 2 cents...

I think someone metioned the camera bit in skinning, but its a valid point towards art in general... ask Dangerous why he doesn't just take pictures of cars....

If you're trying to create something to look like a photo, then just take a photo. When you use a certain medium, you should embrace the qualities of that medium, not try to hide them.

for instance, in painting, or using any other medium for that matter, there are to kinds of pics that u can attempt to create. theres the kind where u can try to make it look exactly like and pic that a camera took, or, u can embrace the qualities of that medium like Adamness said. i think he did a good job at making it look like a camera took it. plus, if ur gonna hag on other peoples work, at least show that u can do better....

That's not true at all. I can't do a lot of things, but it doesn't mean I'm not allowed to express my opinion on the matter. I'm not the President, but I sure share my opinion about him, and there's nothing wrong with doing so.

To me, Photoshop is a photo editing piece of software. I don't use it to create original art, and I'm not too crazy about pieces made in Photoshop. If you want to make 3d art, go actually make something in 3d, instead of a simulation of 3d in the computer. When Pixar or one of those other animation companies do a movie, they create the characters in clay or plaster, and they draw them out. It isn't done exclusively in the computer.

Bert Monroy makes images for the sake of doing so. When you try to be so representational and realistic, as he is, creativity and originality are lost.

The battle between naturalism and symbolism still on i guess...Some people say art is supposed to represent life, in extreme situations to copy life as is. That is naturalism. On the counter part people say art is supposed to represent spiritual processes, thoughts, ideas, even life, but it doesn't have to copy it exactly. That is symbolism. The choice is yours and yours alone.
