WB 5 Updates

Mention is made of downloading the latest build of WB 5. Yet I find that the download remains static, version 5.0.0.0. Since there is talk about of a later version, something like version 5.0 (

, I'm wondering, is there a public beta of later builds that I've missed?

Are you an Object Desktop subscriber? If not, you'll have no access to beta/pre-release versions.

With all due respect, Super Wizop, you are wrong. With considerable effort, I was able to discover not only the nature of this mysterious entity, 'Stardock Central,' but also that I am entirely allowed to use it as a licensed user of Windowblinds. Not only that, but Stardock generously allows me to download other programs in beta for trial, simply because I have licensed WB 5. (Which is not to say that users of WB 4 are disallowed from using it. Of that matter I remain uninformed. Let the 4sers do their own research; I've done enough!)

As I say, the allowance to download other Object Desktop components is generous, but had Stardock enforced its policy against licensed users, well, that would have been an outrage. After all, the upgrades for compatibility are integral to the product. The only reason to keep a proper user from a beta version (sans tech support) is safety, and let it not be said that Stardock cares less for the safety of its Object Desktop users than its mere WB5 users.

If you have paid for a version of a program , you can download pre release versions for the program you purchased ONLY. Trial versions cannot be updated.

Well sorry......... I didn't say anything about you being able or not being able to use Stardock Central. SDC is free for anyone to use. I have no idea why it took "considerable effort", as all that was required was to visit Stardock.com, and click the appropriate link, on the left hand side of the home page.

It has always been a perk for Object Desktop subscribers, that they have access to the betas. If you (as a non-subscriber) are allowed access to betas of WindowBlinds, this is something new, and I'm happy for you. But there have been no announcement of this change of policy, and I was merely stating what has always been (until now) a fact. If you (as a non-subscriber) had not been allowed access to the betas, it would not have been an 'outrage', it would have simply been, the way it has always been.

If you are also allowed access to other ODNT betas, as trials, well good for you. Many components of ODNT have always been available in trial versions, but I've never heard of betas being available as trials.

Super Wizop, I really had no reason to visit Stardock Central after I had been told that I would not be able to download what I needed.

I'm a licensed user of WB 4 and WB 5, and I was responsible for bringing two separate conflicts between WB and third party programs to Neil's attention, one of these a longstanding conflict. So what you're saying is that it would be be OK, if I were unable to use these corrections to WB immediately, because I lacked a subscription to Object Desktop! This would be a real mis-use of beta testing, because correction of conflicts is integral to the WB product. Having a subscription to Object Desktop has nothing to do with the need to have access to issue-correcting public beta releases.

How many users of WB5 know they can download public betas? How many like me were using a program with uncorrected bugs for weeks without knowing the problems had been solved?

Again.... sorry, I was only conveying information about how things have worked for years. I had no idea this had changed recently. I have no control over how Stardock runs their business.

Hey Koasati.

Can't find it, but I seem to remember something about new version betas as opposed to pre release betas of the product version you paid for.

as in only ODNT subscribers were allowed to the WB5 betas prior to release of WB5 - but I believe once WB5 was released, if you paid for WB5 you were entitled to all the updates for a year.

which makes sense to me (but I am Troll) ODNT subscribers understand it's beta and in testing - but once it's released, allowing purchasers of a product access to updates (beta or other) widens the base for further testing.

Not sure, but I think it was in part of Brads post/thread about upcoming changes to WC a while back.
