SphereXP is a new program that is in beta that is designed to turn your desktop into a 3D space. According to the developer:

The Sphere is theory of an 3D workspace represented by a sphere. The user is exactly in the middle of it. All objects are situated around the user. He can easily turn around and manipulate with them. They can be moved around according to some rules. You can bring them closer to the view port or send them back. The theory can be applied to almost any known program. Starting with the desktop interface. Now continuing with a web browser.

It requires the .NET frame-work 2.0 to use.  I haven't tried it yet.

I tried this way back when I first saw it on NT Compatible. It's an interesting app but I found the usability to be unfitting for my needs. Maybe I'm still fond of the Gallery UI that Microsoft's R&D team created. But this one didn't seem all that interesting. Maybe that's changed in the recent releases but who knows. It's a different way to visualize your windows but the drawback is obviously the limitation in GDI+, of which your drawing foundation is based on ancient technology with hacked up legacy code to exploit what little feature your 3D card has.

I dunno about trying it again. If they still rely on using file-based settings (ie. not registry-based), then maybe I'll give it another shot to see what's different this time around.

I gave this a try a while back while there were still in early beta. It's a neat idea, just doesn't work well as a desktop replacement. Navigation wasn't that great even with a little globe telling you where you were in the sphere. Doesn't take a lot of resources, which is good.

A great toy for about 5 minutes until you realize 2d is good.

3d on 2d is still 2d. unless this software comes with special glasses. it's a toy, I agree

interesting...but not really useful
maybe for cool desktop presentations ill use it...
but its really nothing except for the fact that its a 3d desktop...
keep up the great work anyway

I got dizzy from trying it.... the background picture looks out of focus. Not very useful

Interesting idea. Does it work with Desktop X and all those programs?

It might be cool to have an Expose-like program for Windows, but I think a spherical desktop would be too weird.

This is not a new program...it first surfaced about two years ago...was writted by a couple of Israeli fellows, if I remember correctly.

As a WindowBlinds 5 user, I have to say that I was really disappointed in the funky way my desktop folders appeared, when I opened them. My AeroGlass effect was gone... sort of... about 30% of the effect showed up when I moused over the open folder, and still there seemed to be a duplicate window open behind it, that was skinned with the Windows Classic skin...

Of course, once the folders were moved around in the sphere, they seemed to have their own default graphics assigned to them, and they looked okay when I reopened 'em using the Sphere images. So I'd call this an interesting idea at this point, but really ugly to use until it's more developed to be compatible with WB. For all I know, though, for non-WindowBlinds users it might be a godsend.

One thing came out of this, though... I've got .Net Framework 2 installed on my machine now...

Wasn't something like this announced about 2 years ago? Only difference I see now is it needs .net 2

Tried this a year ago....it keeps getting improved so maybe there is some hope with it for the future. Nifty Thang it is.

if youreally want to have this kind of stuff.. you better try project looking glass from java.. it is far better then spherexp and has way more options.. it looks better to

It doesnt like triple LCD screen desktops "sniffle" other than that neat idea that needs work (but its still beta so gonna keep a close eye on it)

Looking glass looks great.....

Too bad I have all Windows based applications, or I would install tonight......

The SphereXP project looks a bit too dizzy to me. I think I would opt for a few monitors, a surround desk, and swivel chair with built in platter for wireless keyboard and mouse instead.......if I had the money.

This seems to be another of those 1980s, 1990s, computer movie art director fantasies.(remember, by 2001, we were all going to be using voice recog/VR gloves & goggles?) I prefer topdesk.
