Creating a better, closer knit, community

Suggestions?

One thing that I think would be good for our community would be to encourage people to interact more together.

Right now, roughly 3,000 people visit this site more than 20 times a day. I would say that's the hub of our "hard-core" community.

I'm not looking to increase that #. What I want to do is find ways to encourage more of those 3,000 to interact on the site. To make comments on skins, forum posts, articles, and news items and interact on things like the map community we set up.

What do you think can be done to encourage that?

Old Crab: Ignore those posts. They obviously have something else they are upset about, sometimes just living is enough is enough to give them a wedgie to complain about. Some people just wear their butts on their foreheads, and like to show others right where it is. These folks have issues they need to discuss with a good therapist. Ranting seems to be the norm in today's world, thanks to Dennis Miller, Bill Mauer, Bill O'Reilly and others. Ranting is what it is. Add to it, or just float around it. Don't feed these poeple's fire by showing that you are affected. They won't afford you respect to use the bandwidth provided, don't serve them any respect by commenting on what they say or by taking anything said as personal. Joke em if they can't take a f***! My granddad died at 96, he said a good sense of humor is how he survived. If they want to rant, they should get a blog and then rant all they want.

Old Crab, if you got stories and you can TELL a good story, I'll read...

was going through DX themes earlier today and ran across comments posted that were rather derogatory. "This is sh!t" was one of them. How is it that this comment remains after 2 or three years? Shouldn't it be removed, and an edit note placed in its stead by an admin?

That classifies as 'mild'. If it were actually noticed by an admin we'd probably just take note of the person for future reference...[in case it's the start of something worse]. Inappropriate comments ARE removed, however...though they tend to be way more extreme than that. If the skinner whose works have attracted such comment feels he needs an 'aisle cleanup' he can email an admin for action. Generally, however, many don't care about 'mildly' abusive twits posting such.

On the other hand, the more extreme comments are the No#1 way to be removed from the site, permanently, but something which is much less common than it was in the past....

Post like you were talking face to face with someone that was 100 pds heavier than you.......

LoL... WoM as surprising as it may seem, some of us are not intimidated by someone larger than ourselves..and you may find this even more surprising..some of us fight for just the fun of it...
But then some of us fit right into Jafo's famous "Knuckle Dragger" catagory...

At anyrate I dont think it is to much to ask people to at least be polite and civil to one another, and if you cant do that just ignore the person you cant seem to get along with....
We all have the ability to swear like a drunken sailor, it just isnt impressive at all, in the end what does it really accomplish?

Arguments/Debates I think are healthy and somewhat interesting, we do learn from them if we can keep an open mind and actually listen.. but many cannot Argue/Debate without losing their temper and start spewing forth obsenities that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic..
It is unfortunate...

Just try to (and it's an old saying) Treat others as you want to be treated...

Tis why I added the bit about martial arts. I'm a big fan of the ability to "register these as lethal weapons". Of course, all that takes is the one owning the "weapons" to think they are lethal.

Since we're starting to slide slightly off topic here I think I'll nudge it back where Brad started it.

The General Forum is kind of the catch all and the "socializing" forum for the site currently. How about a "Subsciber Only" forum to post those more social items.

Now....that would be scubscriber only to post not to read and limited to WC only. No JU, Stardock, Gadgets, etc. interconnection. Not that I have a problem with the bloggers but this would be more for the community.

Threads like Jafo's "hit me" and Word Assoc., Words to Live by could all be moved into it and new long term posts could follow with out crowding out the busiest section on the boards. You could also post those stickies that are informational but not necessarily to be replied in.

Just an idea to kick around..........

To be honest, the forum interface is a bit strange. It is crowded with stickies, and even though it is broken into sub-forums, each of those has sub-forums and user doesn't know which forum a thread might be in until they view it. The search needs some work, too. A cleaner, more intuitive interface might be esier to use and encourage more posts.

I agree completely with what rabid said. I visit one other forum regularly (HeavenGames) and have visited others in the past; this site's forums have the most unique layout, of which I'm not very fond. I find it hard to browse through new threads and sub-forums. I think a better layout may help people like myself, and we would then post more often. I know I would.

Something to keep the conversation going.

The Title is 'Scott Adam's Rules for Internet Debate'

If you are new to the Internet, allow me to explain how to debate in this medium. When one person makes any kind of statement, all you need to do is apply one of these methods to make it sound stupid. Then go on the offensive.
1. Turn someone’s generality into an absolute. For example, if someone makes a general statement that Americans celebrate Christmas, point out that some people are Jewish and so anyone who thinks that ALL Americans celebrate Christmas is stupid. (Bonus points for accusing the person of being anti-Semitic.)
2. Turn someone’s factual statements into implied preferences. For example, if someone mentions that not all Catholic priests are pedophiles, accuse the person who said it of siding with pedophiles.
3. Turn factual statements into implied equivalents. For example, if someone says that Ghandi didn’t eat cows, accuse the person of stupidly implying that cows deserve equal billing with Gandhi.
4. Omit key words. For example, if someone says that people can’t eat rocks, accuse the person of being stupid for suggesting that people can’t eat. Bonus points for arguing that some people CAN eat pebbles if they try hard enough.
5. Assume the dumbest interpretation. For example, if someone says that he can run a mile in 12 minutes, assume he means it happens underwater and argue that no one can hold his breath that long.
6. Hallucinate entirely different points. For example, if someone says apples grow on trees, accuse him of saying snakes have arms and then point out how stupid that is.
7. Use the intellectual laziness card. For example, if someone says that ice is cold, recommend that he take graduate courses in chemistry and meteorology before jumping to stupid conclusions that display a complete ignorance of the complexity of ice.

I could add another point to that NT.

8. Take everything personally. For example if someone states that there are a lot of sofware pirates out there, assume it is directed at you (and only you) personally and start defending yourself agressively. (Bonus points for throwing the accusation back at the initial poster: e.g. "it is always the ones that mention pirates, which are the worst warez users")

You do have THE most valid rule, aufisch. At least it is the easiest to apply directly to some of the posts I have read. You people are so smart! Wish the "others" were too. There was a post recently, asking for help on something minor setting, I forget exactly. Well, I knew the simple answer to the query, so I posted. Whenever I post in a thread where the question seems like it is posted by someone not so much the expert, I try to be as detailed as possible. Well, this guy replied with something along the lines of: "...I wish I could hire a guy like you, I'd pay a million dollars..." and proceeded to tell me where I should go. Others posting rebutted on my behalf, explaining that I was at least trying to help. He went further to describe how he could not afford respect to the intellectual level in the forums...something like that. I really did try hard to keep my humors, and kept posting replies, none would be construed as vulgar or offensive, only rebuttal to his apparently superior intellect. Never did find out what his problem (with the software) was. Oh, he said he thought humor was supposed to be inherent rudeness. Yes, that was it.
