Bash....Island Dog is Right, too many running processes will slow down your machine, as will bloating your OS with programs you don't really need. You need to unload what is unnecessary....the programs you don't need or can do without.

There are also many services and applications that run in the background, some of these can be stopped, but you need to know which ones you can terminate so as not to up your system. So do as ID says and it can be taken from there. A list of running services would also help.


by the way my computer has 80GB and a 1.6GHz processor


You make no mention of how much RAM you have, but your CPU is not the most up to date, and with too many things running you can over-tax it = a slower PC

Bit on the low side.  Ram is cheap....another 512 wouldn't hurt...

Yea, just the fact that you have only 83MB out of 512 physical memory left seems to indicate that you are running a lot of background stuff. I used to run WinXP with everything customized on 256 with no problem.

I would suggest unload some of the more unnecessary gimmicks (maybe you have some that you rarely use?), or buy some more RAM as Jafo suggested.

Bash....yrag is asking what you have loaded on the section of hard-drive where your OS (XP)is. Usually that is C:/ and the other partition is D:/

......you can't have a Volume2 without a Volume1...you either manually changed the drive name or you have a partition. Additionally, if I had to guess, I'd say you didn't format the drive before installing XP again. Let's, for the moment, get past that.

right now its 16GB used and 59GB free but before it was 55GB used and 25GB free


Aside the fact the figures don't add up.....they're irrelevant. Defrag the drive.

If you can't figure out what apps are eating your memory (open taskmgr and it will tell you), then, as noted by others, get more ram. Memory running that close to max (for whatever reason) not only beats up your hard drive and slows your system down, but creates a very large (and fragmented) swap file. Left unattended, it will eventually crash your system. That 'glowing' hard drive LED flashing all the time is your drive asking for help.....help it.

my father told me this and i did it but it only made it go a little faster but then by the next day it was as slow as usual.

i didn't format the drive because my computer came with a built-in recovery system....so i just recovered it ...which i did five time until it got to its normal speed and functions

Doing a Recovery is a waste of time. Doing a Recovery over and over with expectations of a different result is more then a waste..it's a job. If you don't cut back on the present memory usage or add more memory, you'll end up with the same slowdown.

so basiclly. buy new memory.....but my computer has only two slots with are full already

the two slots that are used equal up to 512mg so.....what next?

Buy what you can afford; 1 - 512, 2 - 512, 1 - 1024....you get the idea. Just make sure; #1- that your board supports larger memory sizes and #2- if you only replace one, that the memory speed is equal to or greater then your present ram. If you replace both then buy the fastest you can afford. For info on size and speed, you'll have to RTFM......

I seriously start to think that the best thing would be to backup your personal files. Reformat your Harddrive (Both Volumes), and do a clean install on Volume1. You can then back it up to Volume2 (after you installed only the most important programs) and keep this as a backup for later 'recoveries'.

I am not so sure how much you know about computer so this migth be a little too much for you. Do you have someone around who could help you? (otherwise I would not recommend to do this, especially not if you have never done it).

and i know how to format hard drives.............(because i learned it the hard way when i played around with DOS when i was trying to fix WIN ME whan i was 11)

it's just some words about computers how to do somethings that i never did before....thats all..........right?
