Object Dock (Free) 1.20a won't run period..

I am trying to get object dock to work on my new Sony Vaio XP-Home SP2,
works great on my PC. Here's what happens, It installs fine but it won't run
doesn't even start up. I have tried safe-boot and selective-boot with
minimal drivers and same results. I was introduced to these docking programs
through Aqua-dock but it doesn't support multi-users which I need.

The only drivers I can think of that may affect OD are those for the graphics card. Make sure they're up to date.

How are you starting it? Manually (start menu)?

Do you have an objectdock.exe process showing up in taskmanager?

Do you have an objectdock.exe process showing up in taskmanager?


I've updated the drivers and still having issues, as far as the task manager goes if I continually click on the the icon I will get a task that lasts for about a second then terminates. It's weird..

Get rid of the docklets (especially weather) and try it. Try adding one docklet at a time until it won't start. If you can't get the app up long enough to delete the docklets, then open C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock\Themes\Default and edit out the docklet references, save and start OD.

I thought of that but... how can one remove the docklets when the dock won't even appear?

I guess hacking the ini file(s) is called for?

I had tried that already, I moved the docklets folder right out of the
install directory. Still wouldn't work, I will try editing the ini file
next..

Alternative to hacking the ini file; Make a simple dock (with no docklets) on the PC where the app works and save it as 'whatever' theme. Copy the C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock\Themes\whatever.ini from the PC to a floppy and rename it 'Default.ini'. Copy that Default.ini file into C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock\Themes folder on the lap. It will overwrite the one you have. Start OD

I will try that, I deleted everything from my desktop dock also turned the
drawing technology to Custom and clicked disable docklets and saved theme.
Will try your suggestion with basic ini file..

Copy that Default.ini file into C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock\Themes folder on the lap. It will overwrite the one you have

No luck with replacing the ini file, I've used sysinternals REGMON and FILEMON
to dump Disk and Registry info when I try running the program..

If someone were technical enough, maybe the problem can be deciphered
by looking at the dumps ??? Please !!

From the dumps, it appears to be an API problem, which would lead me to believe the SP2 Service Pack install is corrupted. Something spanked your Registry. If you installed OD as the admin (and you being the one logged in), I know of no reason it should not be working. As to the limited users, that in itself could be causing the problem. As accounts being limited (as to how much, only you know) that could cause OD not to run under those accounts. If all else is equal between the PC and Laptop User setup, then I would think it's the SP2 install.

As an aside, try something before looking elsewhere: clean out C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\ObjectDock and try the 'default.ini' song and dance again.

I just moved that folder on my working computer and it reset my OD
I will try that on the laptop in a while and hope it works. If not I'll
try re-installing SP2..

Just tried your suggestion, that directory structure wasn't on the laptop
so I created it and moved the ini files from a default config into the DIR
still no luck. I'm going to re-install SP2 and see what happens..

I'm still not able to get it to run or even start for that
matter..

My suggestion is to un-install sp2 entirely, I have looked thru the dumps and it looks like a corrupted sp2 install also. Once sp2 has been uninstalled and you are back to xp rtm then re-install sp2 and download all the latest hotfixes/security fixes.

Also make sure to unistall OD before doing this and then re-install afterwards.

EDIT: If you downloaded sp2, don't use the same download to re-install it. Go to the website and download it again. My suggestion is to get the sp2 cd.

I don't see a option in uninstall that allows me to roll back XP, my Vaio
came imaged with SP2 XPHome and no original install CD's.. I have to many
settings configured for the pc that It's not much of a option to do a clean install.

Food for thought after work.....

As I stated earlier, these user accounts could be the problem. I find the fact you didn't have that directory troublesome. On face value it appears you installed OD in something other then the admin account or you're trying to run it on a limited account. The only way to test it is to delete the user accounts and then install OD.

In the future, when you have an ongoing problem, don't edit your last post or no one will catch it. Post a new comment and it will bump the thread to the top. If I had seen the "directory not there" comment earlier, I probably would have saved you the re-install time.

In any case, let us know your progress.....one way or the other, we'll get this running.

That's re-assuring, I just got off work and I'm beat. I'll tackle it tomorrow,
as far as admin goes I've only ever installed and tried running it under admin
acct.

Quick question, is that directory created on first-run or on install?

It's created on 'install'. Try the user thing and failing that go to C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock and delete: Defaultappimages.ini, Defaultcurrenttheme.ini, Defaultsettings.ini and Currenttheme.ini.Leave them in the recyle bin and if it's still a no-go, just restore them.(you should also empty C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\ObjectDock again).

I just un-installed, searched all registry references to stardock and objectdock deleted references. I then rebooted. logged in as admin re-installed and kept a eye on

C:\Documents and Settings\Atlantiana-3K\Local Settings\Application Data

their was no directory created on install. Still won't run.

I don't know if it means anything but Aquadock works fine on the laptop.
