What was Your First Favorite Movie as a Child?

The First Big One

The other day one of my younger brothers told me he bought a new DVD, the movie "The Goonies" for his 2 daughters. I, of course, laughed telling him he bought the movie more for himself than for my nieces.

See, years ago, when my brother first saw "The Goonies" it was a big deal for him. I remember him coming home from the ciniplex with my parents all excited, telling anyone who listened how good it was. I still can see him doing the truffle shuffle.

It got me thinking about the first movie that made me have the same reaction.

Sure, there's movies I liked as a kid, but the first one I saw that made me want to tell everyone how great it was, was "Enter the Dragon".I became at that instant a Bruce Lee fan.

My father took me to go see it and when we got home I ran into the house to tell my mother how great a fighter Bruce Lee was and bragged how fast he was. I still remember where I saw it. It was at one of those old time movie theaters downtown that has long since disappeared.

I can also still remember watching every Bruce Lee movie at home, and afterwards my brothers and I acting like we were martial arts experts. Fake fighting all over the house, imitating every move we just seen. You know how Kung Fu or Karate masters can break boards and bricks. Well, we broke tables, lamps, glasses, plates and windows. And none of them intentionally either.

We were just clumsy as hell. Well my mother put a stop to all that because even though she didn't know Kung Fu or Karate she still showed us her skills with a black belt.

So JU readers, what was the first movie that made you want to tell the world how good it was? Doesn't matter if you don't like it anymore or you think it might be embarrassing to mention. Share it with us. Tell us even if it's a Pauly Shore movie.

Nope, lol. I know I'm in the minority, though. I think for me it is more of a nostalgia thing than a real critical eye. To me, it was a film noir movie. Granted, to Ridley Scott, it wasn't meant to be.

"Unforgiven" was another incredible Eastwood western, but his "man with no name" movies..."A fistful of dollars", "For a few dollars more" and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" were the best, in my opinion. Though "Hang'em High" was a classic, too.

Does anybody remember a lame Sci-fi flick from the late 70s or early 80s called "Saturn 3"? I think it had Farrah Fawcett and...was it Kirk Douglas? Weird movie. Not good enugh for me to bother looking it up, just curious.

His "man with no name" movies are my favorites from him. He has so many other good ones, too. You mentioned Unforgiven and Hang'em High already. I also liked "The Outlaw Josey Wales". I even liked "Pale Rider" even if it was almost another Shane.

Yes, I remember it. It IS "Saturn 3". I remember seeing it on some pay channel late at night when I was in junior high. The reason I remember it is, I watched that lame sci-fi flick just to see if Farrah Fawcett was going to show anything.

It was based on and drew from a lot of different things; Sergio Leone and John Ford westerns, Akira Kurosawa samauri flicks, "Flash Gordon" and "Buck Rogers" serials...all kinds of stuff. Even my dad said that Han Solo was a "cowboy".

I'd have to say The Dark Crystal. I must have watched that movie at least 50 times, although when I saw it again when I was older, strangely enough, I barely remembered it. I think I didn't really understand all of the story when I first saw it, since I likely watched it the most between 2 and 4, or was too AD-Distracted to piece it all together, although I loved the imagery and adventure.

My 1st favorite was Star wars and my 2nd favorite was ET. I guess I've been a sci-fi movie loving gal since age 7

I saw Star Wars as a double feature at the drive-in in the hatch back of my dad's Mercury Capri. The feature following it was "Attack of the Killer Cockroaches". Gotta love those 70s horror flicks

"Squirm"----Giant killer worms mutated by....was it atomic waste? Chemical runoff? Can't remember...some kind of nutty Hollyweird enviro message.
Never forget the image of the worms coming out of the shower head and killing that girl. I think it was a girl; been a while. Well, it was post-"Psycho", and it was a shower, so it was a girl.
Of course, when I saw the movie years later, as an adult (kind of like Halloween II), that scene kind of had less impact.

On a whole 'nother note, did you ever read Philip K. Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep?" Wasn't that the inspiration for "The Blade Runner"?

I never heard of it. I remember "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes". I think I remember those killer cockroaches when I lived in New York.

ET was the first movie to ever make me cry. I remember being really embarrassed when I started sobbing during the dying ET scene but was really impressed that something pretend could move me like that.

I really don't remember much about what I liked in my childhood, maybe because it took place in a different language than I use today.

But I believe my favourite movie was Star Wars as soon as I saw it. I saw a New Hope (before it had the title) on video in Bavaria and Empire Strikes Back on video in Ireland. I had to wait for Return of the Jedi until it was on television in 1990 or so.

Bambie is the first movie I remember seeing in cinema, with my mothers. Don't know when that was, but it was in German.

There was also a series of German movies everybody liked a lot at the time.

And the one thing I remember, because it never went away: Bud Spencer movies. I remember staying up late to watch a Bud Spencer western at 8 PM. And I still enjoy them. Awfully funny. (Italian-German productions, and people tell me Germans have no sense of humour!)

Has anyone ever seen Killer Klowns from Outer Space? It's a fairly cheesy B horror movie but when I first saw it at around 10 or 11 and it gave me nightmares for about 2 years. The evil clowns with their jagged, pointy teeth and crazy straws used to suck blood out of cotton candy cocooned humans was too much.

I'd completely forgotten about it until recently when I found it on dvd. Great movie to watch a little stoned.

Yep. Very, very different, though. Roy Batty is a pharmacist in the book, if I remember correctly, lol. The one thing the movie didn't do much with is the whole animals/empathy thing. It was really interesting in the book, especially the frog at the end.

When I first saw it I teared up at the same scene, and also when Eliot went looking for ET, and saw him by the river. Years later, my eyes got teary watching the same scene with my nieces. I explained to them that my eyes got
watery because something got into them.

Those 3 speak for themselves. Star Wars is a lot of people's first favorite. My fave out of those three is "Empire Strikes Back". Did you like the 3 new ones?

I liked them, too. When I was a young teenager I used to stay up late and watch movies. Sometimes they would show Bud Spencer and Terence Hill movies. The thing I remember most and how mad Bud would get at Terence and how when Bud fought somebody how he would slam his fist down on people's heads.

I'm sure they do but more as writers. Not so much at stand-up. I think it's all in their delivery.

I remember my first favorite movie as a child quite clearly.

I was six years old and the family loaded in the back of our old Chevy station wagon to see the new hit movie everyone was talking about. We children found our way to the playground directly under the screen and played as images of dancing snacks waltzed across the screen over our head. While scrolling text and action over our heads got our attention, it wasn't until the movie's villain first appeared that we quickly left the seesaw and scurried to the safety of our station wagon and the tinny sound system of the drive in movie theater.

The movie? "Star Wars", of course.

I still love The Sound of Music. I seen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers when I was really young but I haven't seen since. I know I should see it again but I never remember to. Kinda like when I go into a music store my mind goes blank, and I can't remember anything I wanted until I get home.

I totally agree. Did you like the movies "The Minority Report" and "Paycheck"? I liked Minority Report but never saw Paycheck.
