I'm just coming back into skinning fresh and find all the options available, while intimidating at first, very exciting. Its harder yes but that just adds a challenge to it. I look over the progress the skinning community and apps have made over the past 6 years and find it amazing.

For the record..your the one that answered my post first with your usual UN-helpful remarks. You may have done nothing to me...but I have seen your comments to others that uploaded a WB that only had 2 stars and was a 1st attempt....your comments were never said in a constructive way. Oh, but NT, what better hobby than skinning is there?

The more there is to skin, the harder it will be to skin and the longer it will take...... Ahhh, but how much prettier is going to look.

Speaking of women, Alexandrie, Gillon and APB are really missed...

Speaking for me it is the versions that kill me. I tried to keep my DX themes and objects up to date but I gave up on it. One more reason is crashing apps (DX was a bugger for a long time) that let You begin at zero after having lost work...

Personally I have to agree that the extra stuff to skin in WB IS a burden to me. I was never a prolific WB skinner (4 full WB and a port) and have turned my attention largely to DX now though even that is losing it's lustre somewhat and I am thinking to just go into helping people realise their dreams for DX rather than trying to realise my own.

For me the fun in WB skinning was always about pushing the boundaries, and making something unconventional which did something in a new way. I used to just about cope with working on a WB skin for long enough to complete one but now I get half way and I just don't feel motivated to continue. It's a lot of work and when you're sick of the sight of your own graphics it just isn't conducive to making a skin.

Maybe I'm just busier now, priorities have changed and I can't devote as much time to it. Maybe I'm just finding excuses. I believe the extra stuff to skin in WB is fantastic and it was a necessary thing as XP came in and there were instantly more things to skin and other products to compete with. I wouldn't go back but I do have massive respect for anyone that can actually complete a WB skin now.

Anyway....it's all very well somehow equating 'skinning' with 'Windowblinds' and ignoring all those other apps that can be as taxing as YOU wont them to be. Eg. Sysmetrix can [if you want] be as simple as a Beatnik or as complex as any WB skin.

Worth repeating, you know....

So true Jafo. I try to skin suites most of the times and applications such as SysMetrix and Rainlendar have added a few extra items to their programs, but in the case of SysMetrix, I always thought that making a skin for it with just a clock it's too lame, after all the program was meant to display so much information.
Im still very loyal to Winamp 2x, but if I ever step up to v.3 or v.5 I would need to skin a lot more, so I'll stick to kicking the llama's ass with v.2x

The fact that there got to be so much to do in a WB skin was the main reason that I gave it up. It's mostly a personal failing, but I just couldn't keep focused for the 3+ weeks that a good skin required.

I've been thinking the same thing. But then again it's not mandatory to skin everything.



Well according to the comments on the skins you upload, you have to skin everything.

I know the graphics section of this site, you can upload 'unfinished skins', but I really think there should be a section or a checkbox per section on not fully skinned items (as well as allow others to finish it since they want to comment on how it is not finished)

Depends on if you're skinning for public acceptance or skinning for yourself, and just making your work available to the public.

Again, something that's done completely voluntarily as a hobby cannot be considered a burden.

If you have no intention to skin 'everything' the best idea would be to make specific note of that in the skin description...caveat emptor.

No-one can then moan that it 'must' be completed, only that they might 'like' it to be...

That would be nice if they listed that in the description, so those that don't have unlimited download could save it for something else, and for those that want certain things skinned.

shure theres a lot of parts to a skin but i like it that way. i think that it would be great if there where more things to skin or more ways to modify them. i'm allways thinking that it would be nice to be able to change this or modify that but it's just not part of the program yet. yet being the key word here. more is good if you like options!

i agree with what was said up there some where. if your not happy with all the things that are needed to do a Full skin then just don't do them. icons just aren't my thing so i just don't do them but i know thats where i need to work the hardest so in time i'll work on them as i have done in the past. i love animations but most of my skins don't have them and why is that you ask? it's because the trial ran out on the software to do them. i just bought that programs rights so i'll be doing them from now on though.

i like to work on graphics and skinning is a great place to PLAY with creating them because when your done you have something tangable to show for the effort. when your creating a skin it's a lot of effort and, when your trying to make your next skin you have to do it with out duplicating what you did in the last skin and thats a chalenge when you start with the same basic design.

what amazes me most is the part where some one claimed some kind of ownership of us and nobody said anything about that!

haven't we "Over Burdened" our skinners? not this one!

I have found, that from the beginning of adding toolbars and animations, that if they aren't included people ask "Are you going to finish it?"
I feel, if a WB has toolbars and animations, you should count it as a bonus.
Some times it takes almost as long as making a WB.

And ~Fairy, I've made a couple for the ladies, because my girlfriend kept complaining that I didn't make any that were for the (girls).

So guess what? I'm going to do just that. I have a plethra of unfinished skins that I think someone could finish or make additions to. I'll put it in the comments and add the GNU (or whatever) contract so that anyone is free to finish skinning the skin... now if it only makes it through moderation... LOL

I wouldnt consider it over burdening... just think of it as a really good project to work on. Icons, for example, are easy to make (sometimes they are a pain, and yes, coming up with a theme is a bit of a pain as well), and althought they have a lot of components, what if skinners enjoy making them? You only complain about it if you are a baby, literally. Just my 2 cents!
