Food Poisoning

yuck. Anybody have this wonderful experience? For the last 30 hours or so my body has been trying to rid itself of a poison. Much of that time was spent "sitting" in the bathroom with a waste basket in my hands because for some reason diahrrea and oral purging have to be done at the same time. Right now, my body feels like it was taken advantage of by soccer hooligans. This is the second time in a year. It's almost worth it to stop eating. (

Am a human being again. Was a dog for a while, I think. There is a very inexpensive grocery market within walking distance of my residence, but you really have to be selective with the veggies. I will typically go to a different store for my produce but ran the risk this time. I believe it was a bad jalapeno but could have been an onion.

Couldn't hold coffee or water down so I had a rippin headache at the same time. Glad I'm on the upswing now.

Geez Bill, better wait till you can get to a reputable store for them veggies. Glad you're getting better. Next time (if there is one) you need to take 800mgs of Echinacea every 1 hour. That would have nipped it in a matter of hours. Sorry you went through that. I had it one time, and thought I was going to die.

By the way. Now that you're better. Drink as much water as you can, and try not to eat anything heavy for a day or 2. Something with electrolites would be good too. 800mgs of Echinachea every 4 hours for the day would'nt hurt you either. You can get it at any Grocerie store a Pharmacy.

Are your muscles aching from the wretching? If not, it sounds like POISON, not bad food. The Echinacea would for sure help those muscles. If you have any questions about it, call me. I have to get off here soon, and do some chores. Troy is taking a test for a class he took to keep his Survey Liscense. Surveyors have to take 15 hours of class a year to keep their Liscense. It's a racket!

I've never had food poisoning that I know of, thank goodness. But a couple of weeks ago, I had my first experience with a systemic allergic reaction...what caused it, we'll probably never know, according to the ER and urgent care docs, it happens to a lot to people, comes and goes, without any known cause. The facial swelling wasn't bad at all, but the hives? Oh, good Lord, I've never been so miserable. I read somewhere that one study showed that people experiencing hives experience nearly as much stress as somehow about to undergo triple bypass heart surgery, and I'm not surprised by that result. It's just awful

I'd be careful of the Echinacea. It's basically ragweed, so if you have hayfever, asthma, or seasonal allergies you're likely to have a reaction to it.
I took someones advice once and took a bunch of echinacea for a cold. Ended up with a cold and a miserable allergy attack.

Strange an onion or jalapeno would cause food poisoning

Did you just eat these things by themselves or mixed with meat or something? Hard to trust grocery stores or fine dining establishments these days, cause you don't know forsure how the food is handled

What are you going to do.......grow your own, I suppose. Hope you are feeling better bud!!

I had food poisoning once, it was awful had the same experience as you SD, but mine came from a seafood salad the dr said it probably was from the crab! My muscles in my stomach ached for 3days

I did get food poisoning a few times, once at work(work camp.....bla, camp food!) The other time was at the college cafateria(long ago)I had fish&chips, with tarter sauce......oh, that tarter sauce.....sick for days, I'll never, ever forget that feeling

I'd be careful of the Echinacea

I have been treating myself, family and loved ones with Echinacea for 14 years. It is not a ragweed. It is a cone flower. I was taught by a Cherokee Medicine Woman. No one I know that has ever used it has ever suffered an allergy to it. Your information is way off and misleading. You must have taken a bad brand that did not work or you did'nt take enough. You have to take more that a few pills a day for illness. And should never take it as a preventative. If you take it when nothing is wrong, you can turn your own immune system on yourself. As for your allergies, I can say you may have been allergic to the Echinacea, but not because it is ragweed. And in my 14 years of experience with it, I have never known anyone to be allergic to it. You are a rare case. And do you know for sure that is where your allergy came from? When giving herbal advice in the future, you should try having a knowledge about it before you say anything. Echinacea has literally saved my life.

Hey tjesterb, I do not care about your links, or your experience with Echinacea. I do have my facts straight. I have many years experience with it. I have many people who can tell you theirs. I, and no one else is gonna take the 1 experience you had and form any kind of informed oppinion of Echinacea. I bet your also one of those that blindly follows everything your Doctor says too. I have not needed to see a Medical Doctor but 1 time in 20 years. And that was before I knew about Echinacea. To someone like me, who is very educated through experience and Old World teachings, your comments are very ignorant and insulting. And I have never made anyone sicker. NOT ONE of the DOZENS of people who have used it at my suggestion. I was put on this earth to help people. Do you think I am trying to hurt people? God help you.

Sorry SD, I just need to say one more thing. My mother had COPD, which is way beyond asthma, never had an allergic and or negative reaction to Echinacea. She took it every time she got a cold. She passed away 1 and 1/2 years ago. Not from Echinacea, but congestive heart failure at the age of 83.

No disharmony on my thread, please. Thanks for your advice Jester and thank you for yours, Cindi. I have my mind made up about Echinacea and along with St John's Wort, it is one that I do not take (and I take about 13 supplements including ginseng, omega 3 fish oil, flaxseed oil, multivitamin, Maitake mushrooms, ginko biloba, spirulina, zinc, oyster shell calcium, vitamin C, arginine, Lysine, ...). Mostly I try to eat right, and Carole you are correct. I ate garlic, onion, jalapeno (which didn't look good), sauteed in olive oil and then cooked Salmon in it. While most would think the salmon, I have eaten previously from the same fish with no ill effects. According to a report the largest culprits of food posoning are #1 Chicken, #2 Scallions (green onion), #3 shellfish.

I don't take echinacia, because according to a study published in Men's health magazine, there is no evidence that it does anything at all for you and while it may be beneficial to some like Cindi, I choose not to take it since the verdict is still out.

Echinacea is the same perennial that is known as the sun loving Cone Flower which is indigenous to prairies here in the heartland of the good old US of A. It is also in the ragweed family, Cindi. I am not saying that it doesn't work for you, but tjesterb is right that people should not just pop supplements randomly without knowing their makeup. Don't get upset. I know that what you're saying is true for you and certainly you would not intentionally try to hurt someone. tjestrb was not implying that. But he is right to advise caution as my doctor has for the same product.

First...People people people...can we just get along here and not fight over stuff so much!? This is getting really petty here on these forums.

Everyone makes mistakes...has there own information about stuff and experience with stuff...yours doesn't mean your right and everyone else is wrong. Whats called one thing in one part of the country can be called something entirely different somewhere else. How one person reacts to something doesn't mean everyone will react the same.

It also comes down to how someone comes across in making a statement...for instance...Cindi...in your post you first stated it wasn't a ragweed then you said it was...not that I care one way or the other...but it is confusing when you contradict yourself.

Less filling...Great taste!...who cares as long as it gets the job done!

Anyway Cindi...I think you were little off base there attacking Tjesterb. He was offering "his" experience and was belittled for it. And if you looked at one of his links it pretty much confirmed that the plant in question is commonly refered to as...coneplant.

Anyway...lets play nice...ok?

Now for what I was going to say...

Surprisingly...alot of people contract food poisoning right from their kitchen sink. At least that what I've read. And I'd think it very rare to get food poisoning from vegetables, even if you didn't wash them before eating them. It would have to be visibly bad to get you really sick, and if it was that bad...well...your already sick just for eating it.

But hey! I could be wrong...just my 2cents.

I feel for ya SD...been there...done that...not fun sittin on the throne like that!

yeah, as long as I'm washing the bathroom with bleach, I might as well do the kitchen (cuttingboard, sink, counter).

...and thanks for the sentiments all. Feeling better now, but don't remember having slept so much in a day as I have today.

Yeah SD, I had never really thought about it until I read about what lurks in the sink. You'd think with all the dishwashing you do that it would be relatively clean...NOT! And it can also be the things you clean with such as sponges or dishrags that can retain germs. So I started changing my sponges regularly as well as using those handiwipes with disinfectant, since I don't have health care I can't afford to be catching anything.
