computer very very very slow to load at startup........please help

Hello there,

I m a brand new user oh desktopX
I have Icon Packager, Icon X, desktopX, objectdock, theme manager, windowblinds and so on running on my computer.
it looks nice but need 4'30" to 5' to load at start up!!!! A Window XP usually needs less than 50 sec to load. This means that when I want to use my computer, I switch it on, then I go take my breackfast, and when I come back, it is just done with the startup process.....
Is it the same for you ?????

Is there a way to speed up a little bit the system at start up or will I take all of this to the trash bin and say good by to desktopX???

First try running a good anti-spyware and adware program like Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy, then fir kicks run Hijack this! just to be sure they're not contributing to it.

Then go to start > run > msconfig and remove any erroneous/unnecessary items from the startup list. [just keep explorer.exe

]
Clean/empty all internet cache's and internal temp files and reboot again.

Looks pretty tough to me.
I tried to do it but as I'm not very good at windows, All I see is e mess for me I can't make out if each item is usefull or not. so How can I deselect it?

By the way I didn't see any explorer.exe in msconfig

Thank you anyway, I will try to make my best. Better than that, I am on the way to format it up and reinstall all the stuff. What do you think?

You can also try disabling some programs to see if it's any of those culprits. Ya never know. If you have all of those programs running at the same time I'd try that route. And like sbgFX said....run some anti spyware programs like Adaware..Spybot...Spywareblaster. I run all 3 of those and I never experience any slowdowns.

Also go to run and type services.msc and disable themes. Then Right click on it too, after you stop it and then do all the things needed to keep it from starting again on next start up under properties. That should help alot.

Here is a little step-by-step if you want to try some of the basics mentioned above:

Perform the following tasks:

1) Deselect any options in programs to "Start automatically of load at start-up", then return Windows to the default theme including all icons.

2) Go to this page: Link, and download "Ad-Aware".

3) Go to this page: Link, and download "Spybot S&D".

4) Install "Ad-Aware", reboot computer, and run Ad-Aware following any prompts to update the definitions and search your computer for spyware programs, when done you will probably be presented with a list of programs that fall in the definition of spyware, adware, and malware which you should select as ones you want to remove (the program will actually quaranteen the programs to start, which is what you want to do.

5) Install "Spybot S&D", reboot computer, and run Spybot. You will may see message from Spybot saying it has detected "Ad-Aware" on your system - it is alright to run the program, so just continue - run the "Search for Updates", select any updates available, then click the "Download updates" button. When complete, select the "Spybot S&D" item in the left hand column of dialog and click "Search for Problems" button. When Spybot is done, if it found anything left behind by "Ad-Aware" you will receive another list to select programs - select them all and click "Fix selected Problems" button.

6) Go Local Disc Properties (right-click hard drive icon> select "Properties"), and click "Disc Cleanup" button on the "General" tab, then go to "Tools" tab and click "Defragment" button, then defragment your drive.

7) Restart your computer, and load your Stardock Programs, pick a WindowBlind, an IconPack, and run the default ObjectDock theme and the default DesktopX theme. Select options in ObjectDock and DesktopX to run at startup, then reboot computer. This will give you an idea of the startup time to expect with all defaults.

8) If you want to run either "msconfig.exe" or "services.msc", you can go to this page: Link to get more information on services before jumping in. Make sure to record which items you deselected in "msconfig.exe", and any services you disabled in "services.msc" if you use these for future reference.

Note - DesktopX themes may include objects (widgets) which access the internet during startup to update their information (i.e., Weather object which give the local weather) and this can take time - which will add to the startup time of the machine.

I know exactly how you feel! I don't know if it's safe to delete a start-up program when I see something like: C:\Progra~1\NetAs~1\SmartB~1\MotiveSB.exe

I don't know if you want to go to this extent, but I recently downloaded "SpeedUpMyPc" and ultimately purchased it. Link It not only lists all the programs that start when you turn on your computer; it will indicate if it's, for example, a "non-essential system process" (and therefore safe to delete) or "this program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer". So, it "tell's" you what to do and I've found it to be a very helpful tool.

Just an option for you to consider that I found works for me.

There is a program available from pcmagazine.com called "Startup Cop" that allows you to disable, rather than delete, programs that start when you boot. This allows you to enable them if you find that they are needed. It also gives a description of each file and what program on your computer it is connected to. It works great and is easier to use than what comes with XP. Another thing that could help is deleting all the files in your "Prefetch" folder. You can find it in c:\windows\prefetch. These are files windows scans at boot up. Do not worry about doing it as windows will recreate any of the files that it really needs.
