I don't mean to imply that those template based sites are inferior, but it is an apples to oranges comparison. More features will come with time. Many web site bugs don't present themselves until you have a few thousand people hitting the site every second.
As for contacting authors, you may be able to find their email address inside the skin file in some cases. WindowBlinds skins, for example, have a place for the authors email address, as do many other applications.
