I am pretty new to OS customization. For a while I just played around with the programs and downloaded stuff. But, as anyone can tell you, that just isn't enough. Pretty soon the bug bites you and you want, no, you need to make something of your own. You need to make your own little pretty that you can put somewhere on your desktop, look at it and say "Cool, I made that."
I finally decided I would start to experiment, and the obvious first move was dock icons. I mean, there is some real crap in the dock icons library (don't get me wrong, there is some amazing work there as well!), so I figured I could at least pull off something like that. And I was using a somewhat obscure program that didn't have an icon in the library already, so I made my own. It didn't turn out great, but it was better than nothing. So I made a second one. It looked a little better. I experimented some more and gradually my icons started looking a little bit better (I still have a long way to go though!).
But, wow, I am slow. And while I am speeding up I still feel sluggish at it. I really want to try my hand at a Window Blind, but am worried how long that would take me. One of these days though, when I am feeling speedy, I just may have to give it a go. I just have to see how it would turn out.
But I am having fun, and finally feel like I am, in some minuscule way, becoming a part of the community. It is good.
