Dead Program

H'i Tell me( hand on heart people) Has anyone got these programs to work as they should do! I waited a long time for my old computer to die then, with a bit more horsepower,i could get my hands on Objectdesktop. Something that i had longed for, beatiful state of the art desktops,make your own design,super icons lots of goodies to make windows much improved.How wrong can you be! After parting with $60 dollers,i find only three work Theme manager just about works,Icon packager works when it feels like it Skinstudio works but with such obscure help fies what are supposed to do with it? Then when i run through the forums and see what trouble everyone else has,the only help i got from stardock central was ( download it it must be a corrupt file) Been there, done it,got the electric bill.I feel really let down.However thanks to all who tried to help. Perhaps i'll try to get it working,but have run out of ideas!

I'm sure it's me, but the only part of your post I understood was the 'Electric Bill' thing. What exactly do you have installed (Stardock apps) and where did you get them?? It sounds like you have Stardock 'Shareware versions' installed. Those must be un-installed before you install the correct verisions via SDC.

David, you probably want to disconnect from the net and make sure nothing other than needed OS options and Drivers are loading upon boot.

Then load the apps and remove all doubt. ODNet should operate fine, if not, what exactly takes place.

If the system reboots without warning, BSOD or if the system hangs I would look and the ram and make sure it is seated tightly and that all fingers are making a good connection.

Specifics are really needed as Gary and Thomassen mentioned already...

but excluding that, a Vanillia boot would probably remove a lot of questions right away. Then once you've got OD loaded, add each application seperatly and reboot between each addition to make sure things are still functioning.

Once you hit the conflict, you can get more specific because you at least have a starting point...

H'i Scribe IPlural. Thanks for your help, but to be honest i have no idea what your talking about!Vanilla boot\ BSOD\ Fingers.I'm not a programer never heard those terms before.I have had a computer for 3 yrs still willing to learn though!Very gratefull for all help that i have got from you all

H'i Developer yraq. I have got the cd Object Desktop Dec 14 2004.
Only ever installed from cd,apart from 1 download of desktopx but i did a clean install on that.Still no joy.I am from the UK so perhaps my way of writing or explaining seems odd!
None of these will open or install from CD or trying from the files.
Win FX.Widgets.Right Click. Keyboard Launcher.Component Tray.Deskx.

I don't use the CD version, but does that come with a program called 'Stardock Central'? If yes, this is what you will have to install first. After installing and rebooting, open the program and install the other programs from within Stardock Central.

... as I said, I am not even sure that Stardock Central is included in the CD version, but normally all Stardock programs are installed and upgraded through it.

Un-install everything relating to Stardock on your computer. www.stardock.com/sdnet_login.asp (cut and paste in your browser) download and install Stardock Central. Put CD in drawer for save keeping. Register serial #'s in SDC in lower right and install everything from there. If you want the beta's (and you do) then check 'Show Pre-release Versions' in lower left. Do one at a time and try loading it so you know which one, if any, is giving you grief. Let us know if you get it up and running or if you're still having problems...

H'i Object desktop refuses to uninstall from control panel message says (this program is uninstalled) But it still runs on the computer.So i got to windows explorer try to uninstall files, that says (Its using files that other programs need,if i uninstall it some programs will not run) Never had this situation before.Any suggestions! Thanks to Developer yraq

Okay, try this. First go to this link: Link

Scroll down the page and find the ODNT Component Zapper. Download that and use it to remove any trace of Object Desktop. Note: I have never used this so I can't tell you how to use it. Best of luck.

Then follow Gary's comment above and install Stardock Central, register your serial number and then install everything through Stardock Central.

Object Desktop is tops in my book. I haven't ever had any problems with the programs (other than minor odd bugs here and there), so I hope you can get things running.

I have installed from both Stardock Central and from CD (after a clean install of XP).

If you still find that some of the programs are running after uninstalling all components from "Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs" (including Object Desktop, Stardock Central, any OEM Theme Managers, CursorXP, ObjectDock, icon suites), I would check for the existence of a "Stardock" folder in the following directory (folder) -

C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Local Settings\Application Data.

The drive letter "C:" may be different if you use a different letter for your local drive where you install your programs to, and the "user name" will be whatever name you have on your user account.

If you are using Windows XP, you will first need to open any Windows Explorer, go to "Tools>Folder Options" and under the "View" tab, you will see a category for "Hidden Files and Folders". In that category, you want to select "Show hidden files and folders" and click "Apply".

Then go to the path shown above and look for a "Stardock" folder, if the Stardock applications have uninstalled properly, it should not be there. If it is there, you can delete it. This should stop any left over processes from running in the background, and allow you to delete the "Stardock" folder (and CursorXP folder if you installed it) in your "C:\Program Files" directory (folder), if it still exists.

This is the manual method for clearing any settings the computer might hold onto which allows it to remember your previous settings in case you decide to install the software again.

I have used this method many times in the past to remove any doubt about a clean software install, and it has always worked fine.

You should be able to run IconPackager, WindowBlinds, ObjectDock (perhaps without zooming if you don't have a lot of memory available), and a couple of widgets without any real issue on a relatively modern PC.

I wish you luck, and recommend you not give up on using Object Desktop. The nice thing about computers is that there is rarely a problem that can't be fixed with a little effort and insight.

H'i I have downloaded, reinstalled,till i'm blue in the face.But everytime i get exactly the same result. Error message on desktopx = (A device attachted to the system is not functioning)Next error msg on desktopx = (The desktop exe file is linked to missing export KERNALL32DLL: Module32NextW ).And desktopx will not open! Widgets wont open as it is linked to desktop.I got Icon packager working,Icon Developer,Theme Manager, Window blinds Thats all.It does seem to run better off the cd than any of the downloads.Unless of course my computer has a fault,256 ram, 80g harddrive,1100mz processor,Win ME Loads of memory to go. Thanks you for your help

Yea, I agree with NT, I think that might explain your problems with DesktopX. I believe you would need an older version of DesktopX, in order to run it on a WinME system succesfully.

If you contact stardock support (support@stardock.com) they might be able to provide you with a link to a ME compatible version.

I tried in comment #7 to ask what version of Windows was on the computer but everyone seemed to bypass that question. Would have saved a lot of brain cells if that would have been resolved in the beginning.

Right i will see what Stardock can come up with.But if it means going to Win XP,thats not an option with me.Because my wife has XP on hers and i hate it!

I hate it too and it was a long time before I switched over to XP from Win9x, but that hate only stems from its butt-ugly gui and ODNT does quite a good job killing it. As for the system itself...XP vs. Win9x, especially WinME. XP is rock solid and continually updated or fixed, depends on how you look at it, while MS support for Win9x is dead or dieing.

In the meantime, why not try the ObjectDesktop programs on the other computer that has XP on it to make sure everything works. Just an idea.

H'i everyone. Have e-mailed Stardock support about using objectdesktop in Win ME.They have stopped support for Win ME and just like other tech support for programs the answer is "tough".
Well I've got ThemeManager + Icon Packager to play with,so i can alter Windows to make appear nicer.
Just say thanks to you all for your help & advice much appreciated!

I'll maybe think about XP,but not happy.

Sorry to hear that, but IconPackager and Windowblind already make a huge difference compared to the standard WinME-(un)design.

And if you can spare the money, an upgrade to XP is very recommended, you will be surprised how much more stable your system will be. I haven't had to reformat my harddrive since I swapped to XP two years ago! (With Win98SE I had to do it approx. every 9 months or so).
