Bootskin

i got bootskin a few days ago and its been working fine, but when i start up my computer it asks me which os to start in :windows xp (bootskin) or windows xp: it works fine whichever i choose but is there anyway to get around this choice, its annoying

I do not obtain to install "bootskin" I could help me? When I install Windows XP I do not enter I give some error and I have that to configure for the security way!
I never made update of windows XP! My Windows is the professional XP!

dont have any idea what you mean, but on a further note, i uninstalled bootskin and im still having the problem, my pc is working fine but its the one kink in my chain of customizing xp and its really bothering me. i have xp pro sp 1. right now im running litestep, logonstudio, icon packager, and style xp. everything runs fast and smooth except the bootscreen, anyone that would have any ideas would be much appreciated

I believe bootskin is just on of those programs that does not work with all computers (note that it is unsupported freeware for exactly this reason).

The reason for this is that there is no such thing as a standardised BIOS. Manufacturers of computersystems often "tweak" and "adjust" the BIOS to their needs.

My own personal rule of thumb whether to install bootskin on a system would be:

1) Laptops and Notebooks > Their BIOS is often very specialised and I came accross quite a few people who ran into problems after installing Bootskin on their portables. No

2)Systems out of the Box (prebuilt systems) > it depends, like I said before some manufacturer tweak their BIOS quite a bit. Maybe, if it doesn't work unistall it.

3)Custom build systems > The BIOS of a motherboard you buy off the shelf can't be as specialised since the manufacturer doesn't know what exactly you put on it. Yes

Note that there are exeptions to this rules. I know of Laptops that work well with bootskin, and I am sure that someone will come accross a custom built system that can't handle this little program.

i have a laptop so i guess im lucky it didnt give me anymore problems, but do you know of any way to fix what happend? its seems like an easy enough problem to fix if you knew enough about computers (which i dont)

Another key thing to remember regarding the installation of BootSkin is that if you are preparing to install XP SP2 ensure you disable BootSkin before doing so otherwise the system will get very upset.

You can reeenable bootskin after rebooting following the SP2 installation

This might be related to your boot.ini file. Hit "Run" type in 'msconfig' and on the first page (under 'General') klick on "use original boot.ini'

If this is already clicked. Try to edit your Boot.ini according to this Microsoft Help file: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=289022. Be sure to exactly follow theyr steps (especially the step about backing up your Boot.ini) before you attempt to mess with this important file.

i fixed it, thanks for your help, all i had to do was uncheck timeto display list of operating systems in the startup and recovery section part of system properties
