SDC using Gecko engine?

With the gaining popularity of FireFox and the growing disappointment of IE is there any plans in the works for SDC to use the gecko engine instead of IE?

Given the close relationship Stardock has with Microsoft, I doubt that would happen, though that would be a nice change over the security issues in IE.

Point me toward a stable ActiveX control for it and we'll talk about an option.

Last time we investigated the matter, it didn't work out so well.

That's how applications use IE. There's an ActiveX control that you simply use to provide browsing functionality in your application. If Gecko doesn't provide it's browser piece as an ActiveX control then it would be far too much trouble to use to be worthwhile. It's a matter of time invested versus gains achieved..

Wow, good question and great answers. i didn't know. maybe that is why Pluck (rss feed gatherer and sharing tool) doesn't have a FireFox version. There has to be a lot of ActiveX going onwhen you want a tool intergrated with IE.

ActiveX is also a means used by some to install viruses, keyloggers,etc.... That's why you want to keep your security settings high in IE, and be VERY careful downloading unsigned ActiveXcontrols.
For these reasons Firefox doesn't use ActiveX (plus it's MS proprietary)
Firefox does have RSS feed, but since I've never used it I can't say if it works any better or not.

The issue here is not that Firefox needs to host ActiveX controls. Your're talking about a completely different type of ActiveX. In this case, it's that there needs to be an ActiveX control wrapped around the Gecko rendering control such that applications that host the IE control can also host the Gecko engine via a similar ActiveX interface.

There does exist such an ActiveX control but it's my understanding it's not ready for prime time and more of a curiosity. MyIE2/Maxthon uses it to host the Gecko engine as an alternative to the IE engine. However, it's pretty flakey

It would be nice to see Stardock make available versions of thier software that use the Gecko engine. However I do understand that development would take time and I would rather see development of the OD products instead.

Yes, as Chris pointed it, we're not talking about the browser being able to host ActiveX, but having the browser being itself available as an activeX component.

I would settle for the default browser being used for anything which links to outside SDC.

Werewolf, since the links in SDC are actually in IE, I doubt that would be feasible.  Can you open a link in Mozilla when you click on it from IE?

But.... links in the software sections of SDC open in my defult browser (Opera), but other links don't. If SDC can't open links in any browser other than IE, how is it that some do?

A trick to know if you're actually reading through IE, right-click on an empty part of the screen you're viewing, if the drop-down is IE's drop-down, then it's IE and can probably only open links in IE, but if it's another contextual menu, then it's the actual SDC software and will open links in your default browser.
