He probably don't have alot of memory so it slowed down the whole system. That would be my guess.

I have 256 MB of RAM. The computer generally runs slow, and programs that use normally about 20 percent of my CPU crash. And how do you overclock your CPU and what does it do? Thanks for your help, peoples.

I use to have a PIII 750 Mhtz with 384MB of ram. Everything ran fine for me. I normally ran Object Dock, sysmetrix, rainlender, quicknotes, Windowblinds, Firewall, virus scanner, and I didn''t have any problems. I even loaded a dx object. There are too many ways to expalin how to optimize your system. Registry, unneccessary startup programs, system settings, certain services elimination, messenger removal, spyware removal, virus scan, and defragmentation will all address the issue.

I just upgraded myself to a P4 3 Ghtz with 1 GB of ram and right now I''m typing this on a friends computer because configuring this sucker with windows 98 and XP is a nightmare.

So, it might be better to just get more ram. More ram never hurts either. I just want to be ready for Half Life 2.

Aside from my comment about trimming the fat to give your system some breathing room I DEFINITELY agree with Essencay`s recommendation to add RAM.

Since your system is probably 3 or 4 years old, I''ll bet enough RAM to fill your system up is fairly cheap ! (perhaps on the order of $100 or so ???).

Crucial (has a good rep., confirm this for yourself !) has a pretty good tool for figuring out exactly which RAM chips you need and of course they sell them: http://www.crucial.com/

Well, I saw a dude at CompUSA about it today, and... It's really confusing. But I have two places to put RAM. I used both of them, so I have two 128 MB's. So, I'd need to take out one and get a 256 MB on 1 DDR. Ugh. It confuses me. So it's going to cost $ 200. But will this really, actually be a notable change in the processor's speed?

Yes, the extra RAM will make a difference, but check around first for a better price. RAM is high-priced right now, but not that high. Unless you have an unusual motherboard, I''m guessing you need PC100 168-pin DDR. You should be able to get 256MB for under $100 if you shop around.
