hey guys, and girls, did i sound like jafo???

just jokin jafo, i said that in defense of our wonderful skinner apprentice, wombat. and i also said that cuz hey, its true!

Turns out the problem is caused, fortunately, by the boot function. It must be setting some bit or not setting some bit (new schoolers read 'byte')somewhere that paralyzes the hibernate functionality. It fooled me because all seems fine until you reboot, then the machine won't hibernate on closing the lid. That boot Windows commercial doesn't last that long anyway and I only reboot maybe twice a month. Having the cool logon is great because that's what I see all the time.

So, moral of the story: if your laptop hibernates, and you like that, then DO NOT change your boot with the utility found here. So far, everything else is incredible. I've successfully (knock on wood) finished the logon screen change, icons, blinds, sysmetrix. That Schwartz II is very tidy end elegant; keeps my head aligned. Indeed, the schwartz is with me now. Now for cursors and when I get the cash, the whole ball of wax or at least big-time blinds.

So, on the lighter side, I hope my friend understands that when I say someone sounds like a bear, I do not actually think he is covered in fur and defecates in the woods. Similarly someone who jokingly gives harmful advice to strangers (possibly unsophisticated computer virgins) may appear to sound like a moronic hacker. Funny, we called ourselves hackers back in the mid-eighties. It meant video game creator. It was the greatest job in the world, certainly in my life; live and breathe the code every waking moment, crash thinking of the game, wake up thinking of the game, watch the stars turn into your screen, sweet and sour of total insanity combined with absolute rationality, coding in assembly to make it all appear to happen in real-time. Now the hackers seek infamy. Go figure.

Travis's Hibernation has never worked correctly. Microsoft has never worked out all of the bugs. Sometimes the programs from here interfere with it and a lot of times programs from other places interfere with it.

If you want to complain to somebody about it, complain to microsoft.

The suggestion to remove the cmos battery is a good one, as would be alternatively 'shorting' the cmos with the jumper reset option.  It's used to overcome Bios settings which are less than ideal, and nothing to do with 'irresponsible hacking' or any other sort of 'hacking'.

I bet if you call the manufacturer and tell them that something is wrong with your bios they will tell you to either pull out and put back in the battery or pull a reset.

I know you should never give catastrophic advice in public where it will not be apparent to outsiders that it was really like a joke, dude.

I think the issue here is that it was valid, responsible advice used by many and NOT intended to 'mislead' or be a 'joke'.

Generally the suggestion to 'C:\format C:' is considered the 'joke of bad taste'.

Main requirement here is NOT to post personal insults attacking fellow members, irrespective of their UserID number, high or low, m'kay?....

 

Reading it all again, I realize I was totally off by thinking Wombat was being malicious or flippant. If one has a laptop, out of warranty, and there seems no way to recover then it might be the last ditch solution. Fortunately XP Restore provides another less brutish solution, although I seriously wondered how well that would actually work. Against the wall we trust Bill and his boys.

I guess you guys are not associated with the software offered here. I don't know how to report bugs or whether we even do that sort of tattle-tale thing. I think this may have been an oversight when they made the stretch to XP. Instead of fixing it for 1% of future XP users with laptops that support hibernation, it may just be sufficient if a warning were prominently placed on the download area that notes that the BOOT screen swapper does not support hibernation under XP.

Time to move on. Hope you were sleeping through all this, Wombat. Have a good life.

If you just started your warranty, the manufacturer will talk you through correcting the problem, even if it means reinstalling the operating system and starting from scratch, or even shipping the iron off to Kentucky for a month to get fixed. If it's not a laptop, then maybe they'll talk you through a little home repair with the bios or whatever it is that has the system so crazy now. If it is an XP system then on the START menu is the Help and Support option and on that other thread I've posted the direction about how to make your computer start like it did way back when it was working well. This would be better than calling tech support, although they may be able to guide you through it.

Be sure not to mention skins or installing software. For me, it was the boot screen change that caused the problems, which now seem pretty tame compared to what is happening where you are.

I hope you get it back to normal soon. I know life stops when our boxes have issues outstanding.
