Obviously you need to be more specific, but here's the basics...
THERE IS NO TRUE DOS IN XP.
DOS in XP is an emulation run by ntvdm.exe. Some DOS programs work fine under the
emulation, some encounter problems, some simply don't work.
If you are trying to get a command prompt, look for Command Prompt under Accessories,
or type cmd (XP prompt) or command (emulated DOS prompt) in Run.
If you are trying to run a game, and you get a hanging blank screen, try restarting
XP in VGA Enabled mode. (Tap f8 as your computer starts to get the option.)
