explorer.exe crashes

Good morning everyone,

Since this morning, DeskScapes app keeps on crashing explorer.exe process. I have on my desktop non animated wallpaper, but nevertheless, it keeps crashing. When deactivated, no wallpaper is shown, but also the system is stable and no more explorer.exe crashes.

I did not change anything in my system config, it seems it stared to happen on it's own.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I believe it was working yesterday, yes? What change since yesterday? New Windows update, any other software update or new software installed. If you have deskscapes loading a playlist of wallpapers. Please check if the wallpaper physical location still reachable via your Windows file explorer. Try that and report back.

Also, please include these information.

  1. Windows full version and OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe
  2. Deskscapes version.

Hello Basj,

thanks for your quick reply. As far as I know, no new WIndows updates were installed since yesterday.

The only new app that was installed was Notezilla.

As for the Windows OS version, it is Windows 11 23H2 enterprise version

Need full version please. Also need deskscape version.

Use Winver.exe that come along with all Windows. It should look something like this.

Thank you, please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

Notezilla could be the cause here. It places "sticky notes" on the desktop, and may conflict with DeskScapes. Try uninstalling Notezilla and see if the issue resolves.

Hello pelaird,

thanks for the suggestion, i tried but it's not that...I deinstalled Notezilla, but the behaviori is the same. Busy cursor is shown as I move it over the empty area on the desktop, and as soon as I click (left mouse click) on the desktop, it turns super white, stays that way for few seconds, and the explorer crashes...

I will try what basj suggested, though i am not convinced it will work

But for some strange reason, animated wallpapers seem to work... At least the less needy ones (like starfield etc)

Oh well.. since this is a laptop device, I will see how it goes, if it will eat up too much of the machine's resources, well...

It is a nicely thought idea, beautifying desktop backgrounds.. but it seems that the app itself, no matter how small, still needs TLC

Yes, i did... no improvement...Like i said.. for some strange reason, it does not affect animated wallpapers, only the static ones.

Just discovered that even with DeskScapes removed, i cannot even set ANY walpaper on my Windows machine

this is now super weird

Go to Windows settings Personalization>Themes>Current theme and select one of the default Windows themes. This should then allow you to change the background.

Yes, need to know if the issue does not appear if you using default Windows wallpaper. If that work as normal, please try Cleanboot and see if you can sort out if some other program conflicting with Deskscapes or there is issue with your admin program. Refer here: https://forums.stardock.com/485954/deskscapes-support-faq#cleanboot.

Do note that Cleanboot steps need to be done with some care.
