I seem destined to hi-jack this thread one way or another.
If either my wife or I want to spend that kind of money, we discuss it first. Then we decide whether or no that's a priority for us right now. That's what marriage is - a partnership. I have to agree with Jafo here. My wife and my daughters are a whole bunch more important than any toy, no matter how appealing. So, in an attempt to bring this back on-topic, my view would be to discuss the purchase and why you want it then decide if that's an appropriate use of funds.
