Bootskin Tutorial?

Does anyone have any info or tutorials on building bootskins? Anything at all would be appreciated.

There is no tutorial yet. Try doing a search (under general discussion) for "bootskins" and read some of the threads. There is some useful info in there but you will have to glean it for yourself, for now.

I search all that when I saw your thread and did not really find much info. I did see that there may be info with in the program but I have not loaded it yet so I am not sure about what may be in there. Good luck

Did a few searches before posting here that didn't really produce anything. I've seen some info at Bootxp.net, but from what I've seen they use the ntoskrnl.exe method which I assume is not compatible with the bootskin program from WC. So no point in gleaning over that tutorial and corrupting my brain... To bad the people that have already made bootskins for WC haven't written anything out any info about this.

Take one 640x480 image....

Reduce it to 4bit 16 colours....

Copy an existing ini file....

edit it in notepad to have the nnew image name....

New author details....

Zip them....

rename 'zip' extension to 'bootskin'....

Done.

Progress bar needs one more image....same 16 colour palette, and a location in the ini for where it is and how wide it progresses.

Ok the way I see it, the dollar will be divided in 4 parts.
30 cents goes to Jafo for the original instructions.
30 cents goes to yrag for porting the instructions.
30 cents goes to China cause she seems to work hard at reading posts
and the remaining 10 cents will be my 10% negotiation commission

webgizmos....no, they are distinctly different in that the 'other' method requires a modified OS kernel...which has the potential to seriously destroy your computer enjoyment if anything goes bad.

The instructions yrag posted [claiming his cut] were mostly gleaned from the included text file....combined with my own dalliance with the proggy which I found to be quite simple, though the co-ordinates for the progress bar seem a bit 'off'....and not reading directly from the base image size, requiring some tweaking.....though that is probably a beta bug.....[the one called 'JAFO']...

Thanks guys for the info...unfortunately I don't understand greek...lol Is there a way to download a bootskin and open it to look at how it was put together? I've tried opening one as text but there's nothing there to see. Is there a particular program I need to use in order to view the file as text?

Yes...it's all in my instructions...if you look closely.....dl the skin and just rename the suffix to 'zip' and open it with your fave zip proggy...
