Renaming items: meta-bug

Fences 4.0.3 has a bug - or collection of bugs - to do with renaming. The problems or some of them seem to go back to at least 2018. See on this forum these reports: here; here; here (and there may be other similar reports). Just now (on Fences 4.0.3) I encountered one version of the problem. For, I created a new directory, within a fence; then I renamed the directory; then I found that Fences had actually renamed a different item.
