Help! keep getting errors when I try to install the upgrade

I uninstalled the old version and try installing the 1.9.  I keep getting "setup can not create the following folder"

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock\Start10\Round7

 

Also it says "We're sorry but the install has failed, would you like to view our help FAQs?"

I just want this to work as I've used it for years and never had a problem. I can't even install the old version back on.

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try the purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/486022/start10-support-faq#reinstalling

Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purge, reinstall using the latest version you just download. Reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back.

Purge did not work.  Still getting the same error.  I did the purge then restarted and get the same after reinstalling the newest version even as administrator.

Look to me that there is something going on with your security software, which is not happening to others, that I know of. which is blocking the installation process. Please try to disable the security software before installing. Try that and report back.

I'm having the same issue. It was failing to update via Object desktop with error code 121. I have the same error as rcoplien when I was updating it from the update option in Start10 itself. I now see that error when trying to install it after I had uninstalled it and after the purge.

I did the purge dll app now I have lost all my start menu and my bottom task bar.  I can't see my desk top and my monitor is bright green.  HELP!!!!!

Good Morning. 

I am having issues with Start 10 since update 1.91 came out. When I got the update notification I downloaded the executable and tried to install the update. I got an error and the installation failed. I cannot remember the exact wording of the error but it was something to do with a file could not be overwritten, or saved or found.

I double checked that all startdock processes had been shutdown in case something was still running, tried the update again and got the same error. 

This morning I used the purge bat for Start10, restarted my computer. I went as far as to manually verify the verious folders in %appdata%/Roaming,  %appdata%/Local  & Program Files (x86)/Startdock were empty. After restarting my PC again, my installation failed due to  'Setup can not create the following folder.' 'C:\Users\Public\Documents\Startdock\Start10\Round7'. If I click the visit FAQ page button when the error pops up the URL has this page reference `#121`.

 

System Specs:
- Windows 10 Pro
- 1Tb worth of SSD
- 8700K
- 16Gb DDR4

- Anti-Virus - Windows Defender

 

If anyone from Stardock could give me a fix that would be awesome, I have been stuck with the default windows 10 startmenu for an hour and I'm already regreating several of Microsoft's life decisions.

Same thing happened to me and I have tried everything. Even shut off my Microsoft Antivirus defender. Finally gave up and downloaded Custom Shell from google. Does pretty much the same thing and its free. Very disappointed that the update didnt work and even the old version won't  reinstall.  $4.99 down the drain.

I'm not quite ready to give up on Stardock, I've been using it on computers for years, but it would be nice if I could get a fix for this quickly, because the Windows 10 menu is horrible and I won't stick with it for too long.

Do you have the os option enabled to protect files against ransomware?  Thats an option disabled by default which can stop installers writing to locations they need to.

I had not turned that feature on, but alas at some point it was turned on by something, possibly a Windows update.

After temporarily disabling the protection I was able to install Start10 and the protection has been re-enabled. 

 

Thanks for the help, it is hard to express just how awful the default start menu in Windows 10 is, now I can go back to having a more traditional layout.

I'd suggest this issue has probably and will continue to occur, could I suggest adding a notification to the installer to help people through that issue.

The problem is antivirus apps sometimes prevent things happening which are perfectly legitimate but they decide to stop them silently.  Generally speaking if you have to disable the AV it is a problem being caused by the AV app.

The installer isn't always aware that these things have happened or why they have happened.

The beta of 1.93 now silently ignores the installation of the optional extra skins for Start10 which should sort out issue with the anti ransomware feature that Microsoft have in the OS should it be enabled by the user.
