A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5
minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out
together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be?

really???? sounds like to me the husband has super natural powers.

families are groups too. I believe it was the War of the Roses??? Talk about kill them because they are not us

school groups, teams, social groups, biker groups, clans... I guess when you in a group some of the member might ty to gain strength in numbers or feel they are superior because they are in a 'select' group.

Come on now. From Mensa's web site:

Membership in Mensa is open to persons who have attained a score within the upper two percent of the general population on an approved intelligence test

Maybe nobody here mentionned superior intelligence, but that's what Mensa is about.
Joetheblow: I'd feel the same about any school group, teams, social groups, biker groups, clans or families if they only admited what their considered the better human beings.

I think you're confusing "better" with "Scores in the upper 2% of general population on IQ test" though. They don't make any claim to be better, at least there. Having standards of some kind for admission is nothing new, whether it be gender, religion, political affiliation, or what not. Nothing really wrong with that, IMO - birds of a feather like to flock together (as long as Hoppity's not lurking somewhere with an RPG ). The problem is when people claim that any given trait *does* confer superiority. That's a highly subjective and very contentious issue, as we have demonstrated here. I don't know if MENSA does that - I'm not a member. As a private organization they are certainly entitled to set standards for admission, though, no matter what anyone may think of them. That's one aspect of freedom, and I'm certainly not going to complain about it!

I'm sorry, but to me "scores in the upper 2% of an intelligence test" and "the better 2% on an intelligence test" really does sound exactly the same.

If I start a club admiting only the 2% of the population that are white with blonds hair and blue eyes, I'm certainly free to do it. I don't have to officially say that I consider that the be superior, but I think it's quite implicit.

The question would be then: why would anybody want to join my club? Just for the fun of hanging around other white blond people with blue eyes? (I'm sure they are a whole of a lot more fun than boring dark haired people)  No, of course. They would join simply because it makes them feel good about themselves. Hey! I'm member of this club because I'm among the top 2%. 

But I do think there is a hidden agenda, that is to match intelligent couples together so they make smarter kids. But thre is no evidence of that. Just a hunch, reading between the lines in their documentations.

well regarless of any elitist plan to take over the earth or snub people here's a little question:

which would you choose?

1) 100% chance that you pay 1000 dollars over a years time.
2) .1% chance that you would pay 30000 dollars in that same year.

OK, lets drop Mensa for another problem to solve. How about this:

You have 4 pieces of chain, with 3 rings in each. Your goal is to form a complete circle of 12 rings.
Like this:


- Opening a ring costs 3 cents
- Closing a ring costs 2 cents
- You have 15 cents

How are you going to do this?

Well, the right ring is already complete with twelve links unless I miscounted, and forming a complete circle out of the other one should only cost two cents.
By the way, as for IQ itself, I'm really having doubts on it. Despite having high IQs, many of the Matrix-fanboys on the Pointless Waste of Time forums still do not understand the true intention of the article that they attempt to debunk.

Psycho Janus. The drawing on the left is what you have, the drawing on the right is what you want to achieve.

Most people would try to open on link in each of the chain segment, and therefore opening and closing 4 links (20 cents). But Lecrayon gave the correct answer. Open all 3 links of one segment, use the 3 links to join the remaining 3 segments. 15 cents. Bravo Lecrayon. This is an example of what Hoppity was refering to as "lateral thnking". Some people call it also "thinking outside of the box".

Hmmm, let me see. The last meeting I went to (held in a local pub) had discussions about how rubbish the beer was, where everyone was going on their holidays, the rules of ice hockey plus various other meanderings, all interspersed with numerous jokes and a few pints.

Anyone coming to a meeting to demonstrate how smart they are would last two seconds

Most members bring family, so the group is mixed between Mensans and non Mensans. Meetings are just a way of getting like minded people together, much the same as any other kind of meeting.
