Skin Studio 3 question

I downloaded SkinStudio3 and have been learning it best I can. So far it is slow going but getting better.
My question is: What are the 'masks' used for?
I think I know what a mask is for (to hide something), but what do they do in SkinStudio3?

masks are used for custom color options. Each image to be allowed to be custom colored has to have a mask.

I installed the new 3.0 version yesterday, I find it more work to work on buttons, the older version I could do right from the preview window.

Also the log off button doesn't show up in the previews or the button section, I'm refering to the buttons on the control panel,
(log off/shut down.
If I'm going to edit the programs panel it won't match.

I only used it a couple of times but find it more work and confusing than the older versions.

If I understand, the skin color can be changed by the user where the mask is, but the original color will always show where the mask isn't. Or is that backwards?

you have it right the first way. If an image has a mask, it will be colored. If it doesn't have a mask, it's color will not change.

ok, got it. One more question, for now
Do you have to make the masks or does SkinStudio do it for you based on the main graphic?

Skin Studio, apparently has the ability to make masks. I have not tried it though. I believe you can make a mask for any individual graphic you wish.

And the masks have to be greyscale (Only using black and white in them).
Areas of white will have their colours changed when cusotm colouring is set, and black areas will be ignored.
Mid tones between these two, i.e. shades of grey, will be blended accordingly.

Actually just to confuse a bit the masks do not have to be greyscale (or at least didn't). You can cause some interesting effects by masking out a certain colour or colours. I think Frogboy did a sample skin a long time ago that had colored spots on it's border when custom colouring was on but when it was off there was no evidence of them. Nobody seems to have ever done anything else using coloured masks though.
