Patty Duke, who won an Oscar as best supporting actress and a Golden Globe at age 16 in her portrayal of Helen Keller in "The Miracle Worker" and three Emmy Awards for "The Miracle Worker", "Captains and Kings" and "My Sweet Charlie", died today in her home. She was nominated for an Emmy for her "The Patty Duke Show" which ran three seasons. She also acted in "The Valley of the Dolls" and a few other films.
She and her siblings had a tough childhood. Her father suffered from alcoholism and her mother, from depression. She was diagnosed as having Bipolar Disease. She campaigned her whole life for support for mental health .
Her family's announcement of her death due to sepsis from a ruptured intestine came this morning.
