Feedback, or "Why I uninstall Start10"

Hi,

I've been a long time fan of both Start8 and Start10 but recently the lack of an important feature in both of these have finally made me uninstall Start10. I'm still running Start8 on my 8.1 computer, but that is because the start screen still sucks.

Anyway, the feature that both versions are sorely lacking is the ability to search through Settings/Control Panel applets using related terminology and queries. In native start menu in Windows 7 you could type "index" in search and you got a bunch of various settings in the control panel related to indexing, such as "Change how Windows searches." This is sadly not the case with Start8 or Start10.

What's even more ridiculous is that even ClassicShell has this feature! While I love the design of Start8 and Start10 (rocking the 'Modern style' in Start10!) the search functionality just isn't up to par any longer. I bought Start8 on release and followed the development throughout the years in the hope that the feature would be added, but now when Start10 have arrived and you still don't support such a basic and powerful tool I'm just amazed at the lack of development. Aren't you power users yourself?

Anyway, while Win10's start menu still has a couple of issues it at least gives me results from Settings and Control Panel while searching for something. Until your product does as well I'll stick with Win10's embedded search menu and recommend potential buyers to get ClassicShell or another alternative instead if they regularly use the search functionality of the start menu.

I believe you may be the first person to ever request such a thing.

It is worth noting Start10 allows you to use Cortana search with the menu which would appear to achieve both aims for you.

It still does that. If I hit the Win key and type "Remote" I get a separate Settings category in the search results with (for example):

....

* Select users who can use remote desktop

* Allow remote access to your computer

...

Neil: I think the reason no-one has requested it has been a part of the standard Start menu since at least Win7 and also has always just worked in Start8 and Start10 (for me at least),

I'm running Start10 in both Win10 x64 Enterprise and Professional and this works, otherwise I'd been complaining too!

This is the result of searching for "remote":

Start10 doesn't seem to include any applets from Control Panel or Settings, the only results I get are those in the start menu folders (I have even enabled "include files outside the standard libraries").

Part of the problem is that I seem to be experiencing an extremely slow search for some reason. I experienced a similar issue the few minutes I tried one of your competitor's application, StartIsBack I believe. Disabling "include files outside the standard libraries" did no difference.

The selected results in the screenshot below only showed up about 5-10 seconds after I had finished typing (hence part of the confusion since search should be instant):

I'm really confused as why this is the case... The OS and everything is running of an Intel 730 240 GB SSD, so I really shouldn't have these problems. Enabling "include files outside the standard libraries" makes those results show up directly after the Documents section has appeared. So the only slowdown seems to be with the "Control Panel" section.

I even tried with removing drive letters to all of my secondary HDDs (1x SSD, 2x SSHD in RAID0, 1x HDD) with no success, so I'm not really sure where the slowdown resides as my primary SSD has about 500 MBps in Read/Write speeds.

EDIT: I just tried creating a new local account with the same slowdown in search, so it doesn't seem bound to my user account.

EDIT 2: Even tried disconnecting the SATA cables to all mechanical secondary drives, same problem.

Hi Aemony,

I use Start8 1.01 and whitin a second I have a result on the text 'remote'. Sorry no image, but I got items from Programs, Configuration settings, Documents and my music folder.

Did you stop Windows searchindexer.exe? That could cause your problem.
