Icons Disappearing

Recently icons started disappearing - for example I have a PDF file on my desktop in a fence. I copy and paste that file right on the desktop. It does not show up anywhere. I go to the desktop folder and the new and old PDF are there but they don't appear on the desktop.

Also, my icons are randomly switching to generic icons.

I am using the latest version 2.1.2
