I have been a free Fences user for years and have turned dozens of people on to it. I recently got an upgrade message and again selected the free version (there is nothing additional in the pro version that I need - despite the fact that this version keeps showing a countdown - now 8 days - until the 'trial' is over and I'll be expected to pay for the Pro version - which I do not want). I have about a dozen fences filled with shortcuts, folders, and apps, covering about 90% of my very-high-res monitor. A few days ago, I went into my office and all I saw was my wallpaper. I double clicked, but the fences didn't return. I went into the Fences control module, picked the most recent screenshot - from earlier that day - and was able to restore my fences.
Today, while working, it happened again. This time, I tried restoring to all three of my backup screens. Each time, it failed to produce the Fences or their contents. The only thing I got back was two icons that hadn't been in the fences. Both icons appear and disappear if I double click the desktop, but there is no sign of my Fences or the scores of icons they contained. I don't want to spend two days rebuilding this.
I ran the SDSupportTool and have a log, but the darn thing seemed to hoover up virtually my entire primary drive and, as a working s/w consultant with proprietary and confidential information on the drive, I don't want to send the log out to ANYBODY if I can help it.
I've tried playing with changing resolution, landscape/portrait switches and other tricks, but nothing helped. Now, though I explicitly told it not to update my desktop snapshot, today's snapshot, which showed the entire Fences layout an hour ago, now only shows my wallpaper. The two previous snapshots are okay - but fail to restore my desktop when I select and activate them.
Fences has been one of my most prized organizational tools for years, but, if I can't trust newer versions, I'm going to have to remove it.
