Perhaps snarph is wondering what addditional features the indie builds offer over the .24.6 builds of the installer v2 days. And how to implement them in regards to themeing.
You will find the main differences occur in the popup, the shortcuts3 module, math expressions used to define x,y coordinates, and the lscp control panel.
Unfortunately the changes and how to use them aren't very well documented anywhere. On my site (I don't know how to do the link thing so bear with me, http://leechprint.com/Phil/start.htm , that better work or I'm embarassed) Anyway on my site I have documented how to implement the popup changes and some of the shortcut3 commands. Really the shortcut3 is a experimentation module, but the popup commands are easy and commonly used, already.
The math exressions I referred to are tricky, and all you can do there is pull down a couple of newer themes to check that out. They are used mainly for placing modules, etc relative to center coordinates, that type of thing.
The control panel isn't really a themeing feature at all, but it's very cool. You can launch the control panel with the bang command - !lscp
I hope that info is helpfull, cause I'm brutal at typing and this took me fifteen minutes
