So I just purchased Fences yesterday, and I'm really liking it, but there are a few things that I'd love to see implemented in a future version.
1- Option to leave the placement of desktop icons alone. Fences are great for organizing the desktop, but they shouldn't necessitate all-or-nothing usage. I often have 1 or 2 files that I want to separate from others on a temporary basis - files that I'll need for maybe a day or two but will be deleted after that. With Fences enabled, I have no ability to move individual files around on the desktop - they're always auto-arranged to the left of my desktop. The only way I can separate them is to create a fence and then position that where I want. That shouldn't be necessary for something that I'm going to delete anyway.
2- I think this was asked previously, but it would be great to have the ability to view fences in other modes than just icons. In icon mode, most long file names are truncated to the point where they're totally unreadable, necessitating hovering over or clicking on each one until you find the file you're looking for. I know you can somewhat solve the problem through the use of folder portals, which can view contents as a list, details, etc. There was some explanation for this lack of functionality, but it didn't seem to really make sense as to why this simply wasn't possible.
3- When hovering over a fence or folder portal, it'd be great if the scroll wheel would always scroll the contents. This happens if I've previously clicked on the desktop, but if I'm hovering after being in an application, the fence shows the scroll bar, but doesn't actually scroll with the wheel unless I first click in the fence or on the desktop.
4- The options to create fences with left/right or left and right mouse buttons are fine, but there should also be an option to turn this off or use a key combination - ctrl left click for example. Once I have my fences set up, and don't need to create any more (or at least not often), the create fence popup on any drag is a little distracting. Right now, the only way to stop this is to disable fences completely. At minimum, a key combination would make it far less likely that this popup would come up inadvertently.
Anyway, that's all I can think of. Really great product overall, and maybe the way I prefer to organize my desktop is a little unusual (preferring the "a little of both" approach of being able to use fences AND icon placement), but these few things would really polish a terrific little program.
