Transparent TGAs

Yes, there is such a thing

I'm trying to skin a video game that I play. The thing is, it requires the artwork to be transparent TGA.  The instructions I find either tell you how to do using PS - no, I don't have $1,000 US to buy. Don't have $10. Or they talk about using an Alpha layer, HUH?  I have several programs that I think can do Alpha layer. If not GIMP will (but we have had a rocky marriage in the past) and I can download it.

So, great Gurus and Guruesses, anyone got experience with this mystery that is supposed to not exist at all?

this thread doesn't help. Photoshop can handle transparent TGAs very well, it's just not as convinient as it was with older versions.

the original poster does not have Photoshop though. and as i guess from the post is not that experienced with graphics editing.

 

so here's an easy way:

just create a transparent PNG in the graphics editor of your choice. then open it in XnView and save it as TGA. this will keep all the transparency intact (in the alpha-channel), without you need to worrying about it.

or use GIMP. it handles TGA alpha-transparency automagically, PS users will be jealous about that feature.

OK, round, uh, must be about 8, with GIMP. The UIs are really fun to work with but I sure want to use my own graphics.
