Surface Tablet Will Be This Much to That Much

Windows 8 will arrive to retail in just about a month, and we still have no pricing or pre-orders available.  Rumors have been persisting that they will offer a $199 version, but there’s no way they will price it that low.  In an interview, Steve Baller placed the pricing between $300 and $800, quite a range.

“In a recent interview with Seattle Times, Steve Ballmer said that the expectation is Microsoft will have an “epic year” with all of their new products. He was also asked about whether the upcoming Microsoft Surface tablet would be competing with the iPad on price or features, and the answer seems to be “features.” Although he mentions that the price of the upcoming tablet has not yet been announced, he thinks the device will run somewhere between $300 and $800. This should put the $199 Surface rumor to bed.”

I was really looking forward to giving Surface a go, but the RT limitation against installing third-party software unless they OK'd by Microsoft and only available through the MS Store seriously put a dent in my expectations.

The retail price, here in Denmark, is estimated at around 2800-3000 DKR ($460-500) which doesn't put me off at all, but I don't need a limited MS Office tablet.
And I don't wanna chance it that the various applications that I use daily will be available for Windows RT - I somehow doubt there's a real market for it.

On the other hand, EVERY application in WinRT is built for the latest version of the OS (instead of 'Android 2.2/2.3 and up') and uses hardware acceleration and is built for a decent resolution.

The early prices might be a little high, but I'd definately snag one if I could.

MS Surface will compliment my upcoming Nokia Lumia 920 running Window Phone 8 and my desktop/notebook with Windows 8 quite nicely.

Everyone should've known that already.

The $200 Nexus 7 only has 8GB of space and a 7" screen.  The lowest Surface RT model available has 32GB and 10".

That's enough to say there was never any chance of it being $200.

True, but that doesn't benefit the individual user if the software devs doesn't bother makeing RT versions of their software.

That's pretty unlikely.  WinRT apps work in both Windows 8 and Windows RT.

So unless people just stop developing for Windows entirely, the apps will come.

Mainly:

1) I hate Windows Exploder. Haven't used it in years, other than for the odd screenshot. I use Total Commander as filemanager.

2) I refuse to use the buggy/crappy/good-for-nothing-piece-of-SHIT Internet Exploder. Only thing it MAY be used for is to download a proper browser. So, any other browser. Chrome, FireFox, PaleMoon, etc etc.

Google and/or Mozilla MAY develope RT compatible versions, but will it be ok'd by MS? I doubt it....

Windows RT is a pure tablet OS. there will be no desktop.

i am not sure wether there will be any file manager for Windows RT. i was sceptic about iOS having none, but seriously: i can not think of a scenario where i would want to use a file manager on the iPad. a tablet is a different device than a desktop.

why would MS not allow different browsers? most of you guys on WC hate Apple with a passion, but even this "evil" company allows plenty of alternative browsers on iOS (not different rendering engines though, with the exception of Opera which prerenders sites on it's own servers). Chrome runs great on the iPad and especially the synchronizing via the cloud is fantastic.

but as i have yet to meet one single person with a Windows phone or a Zune i am pretty sure how much of a success Windows tablets will be.

Actually Office 2013 for RT runs in desktop mode...
