The Crazy Demographics of WinCustomize

To say I'm surprised is an understatement. Now, as I type this, there's only 175 respondents to the latest poll but that still gives a decent projection of the most active visitors of this site:

76% (3 out of 4) of the active members of this site are over 21.

Any lingering doubts that the "skinning community" has had a fundamental split should be nearly resolved now and it seems to be an age-related split.

So any ideas on why Wincustomize attracts an older crowd than the other related sites?

Shucks, guess I missed out on the wheelchair since I must have signed up too soon. After mowing the lawn and pulling weeds, I think I sure could have used it.

Lets see, most of the admins here are 30+ years of age. I'm sure that is good reason. Not the only one, but a good one.

I don't know, but it's pretty much the same kind of demographics that the OLD skinz.org used to have, as opposed at the time to deskmod and deviantart who had a younger crowd.

T-man: Jark and I are the same age and deviantART's demographic is much younger (teens).

It is really interesting indeed. I have no theories on why that is except one: People who buy software tend to be a bit older and this site tends to have a lot of Stardock customers.

Now that would be a GOOD next poll.

When I heard this site had T-shirts, I thought it was of the "Wet" variety so I joined up immediately. I quickly learned the truth. Now I stay for the truly amazing designs that come from this little old site.

BTW, I'm in my 40's. Now what does that do to your demographics???

That also puts to rest any thoughts that deviantART and WinCustomize compete. DA and WC definitely don't compete with each other.

I reckon it's mainly becuase WC would never tolerate some of the shit that goes on over at DA. If you go through the message forums, it's pretty screwed up what some of those kids are posting.
It's somewhat disheartening, and for me personally, it's taken away from DA a little, but on the other hand, to Jark's credit, I guess he gives the kids there a little bit of space to vent off.

Wow, only 11% in my age group at DA. I figured I'd be in a minority, but not that small. At 28, I still considered myself a bit of a youngster. It seems you spend your youth wishing you were older, then one day, you realize you are. I wanna go back!

Quiet old man! Or it's into the home you go!

I actually used to keep a journal from the age of 18 to 20 and holy cow was I melodramatic. Everything was the end of the world. Anyone who thinks the dialog in Episode II's love scenes are cheesy has forgotten how 20 year olds speak.

Kids are not interested in this kind of thing. My daughter is 19 and I tried to get her interested. All she wants to do is chat...and play online gaming. To really see what you have, email a poll to all of your member, with the following:
What category do you fall into

Stay on home Mom or dad
Employed outside of home
Employed inside of home

and whatever else you might think of, I work outside the home, and spend my off hours doing this, I am over 50. It would be interesting to see the types of people that use this rather than the age..

OK. I'm a Vietnam combat vet, college degreed and, oops, 51 years old. I also work 50-60 hrs. a week, but the art, the software... somebody help me!

One could say it is the lack of kids that draws the old folk in. Or the other way around (either they drive the kids out, or they fled by themselves).

But... you can only deduce this from the responses to the poll. 175 on 300.000 is not very... umm, whatstheword... representative?

Yes, it would be interesting to see other demographic indicators.

(I'm 30, with an engineering degree, full time job as an IT Manager, part time jobs as a group fitness instructor an an officer cadet in the Reserves.)

I dunno... hmm me thinks one of the biggest things is the design of the site that keeps the kids away actually, the site design is more calm and not flashy w/ icons and personal cards etc. (your ID icon thingy) stuff of that nature that keep the site toned down?

plus the limited skin sections of course...
