Can Mozilla come back?

Mozilla RC2 is out and it's pretty darn impressive. It's really got the goods:

1) Fully skinnable (especially if you use WindowBlinds with it)
2) Can block pop up ads
3) Fast
4) Clean UI.

So can it make a dent or is it too late? What do you think?

Hum... Hard to say. I do believe tey don't stand a chance, mostly because IE is shiped with Windows... I remember reading something about some lawsuit about that.

I am currently using RC1 and love it the popup suppression and ability to be skinned by WB is awesome.

But seriously untill vendors can ship Mozilla with new boxes or most of the major ISPs convert I would say the user base will still be small as compared to IE

Is it fully compatable with IE5? I mean fully. If it isn't it doesn't stand a chance. After about the 3rd time a user has to switch browsers because a page either doesn't work right or it doesn't look right it becomes more of a pain then it is worth. My Dad went through that with Netscape. He hated M$ and tried to avoid using their software whenever possible. I was at his house and was surfing using IE. I went to a few pages he regularly went to. He was surprised how much better they looked.

Moral of the story..... He never used Netscape again.

It's fully compatible with the W3C standards. Lets just say that it's closer to IE than to Netscape 4 as to what it supports.
It even supports MORE things that IE doesn't (like full PNG support for example).

No, it's a much better browser, but since when does that mean anything.

i've pretty much switched over to mozilla. it 0wns IE cause, in my testing, is alot faster at page loading and offers some great features. on top of that i love the tabbed browsing feature rather than having 10^987234 windows open on the taskbar.

I just wish they'd enhance the tab support (open a new tab when keying in an address but without having to hold down the control key), specify whether that tabs should be opened at the end of the tab list or to the right of the current tab, drag the tabs around to change the order...

BTW I never figured out how to get the popup suppression to work. I still got pop ups all over the place.

Well, considering the fact that AOL is switching to Mozilla, I'd say it has a chance, although I'm not sure how good of one. I'll be using it for sure though, I already have been for nearly a year. In addition to what has already been mentioned, I really like the bookmark keywords feature with %s. and the new HTTP pipelining feature is really nice too. IE5 is not compatible with W3C standards, but IE6 is pretty close, so most pages designed for IE6 should work perfectly in Moz, but IE5 pages might not, and IE4 pages probably won't unless they don't use any of the "advanced" (read: proprietary) features.

mozilla should stop fiddling with around with "useful" features and instead make a browser that can actually rival IE.

IE is much better thant mozilla, it actually displays webpages correctly!

As mentioned earlier I have been using Mozilla regularly since ver .9 and now version 1.0 rc2 and have encountered very few problems with current websites. If you stunble on a site that was made with frontpage for IE 4 you may have problems but most high profile sites are normally designed to the w3c standards and mozilla renders them correctly.

chris: to supress popups do the following:

go to preferences -> advanced -> scripts and windows

then uncheck the "open unrequested windows" option in the "allow webpages to" section. that will stop popups.

Well given that I just got: mozilla-win32-1.0rc2-installer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

My guess is that it is crap... if you cant even write a decent installer how on earth could you write a good web browser ?

though, Id say opera is comming along nicely and Ive started using it more and more, if it only had support for IE-bars

I mostly use Opera (6.01), though if some site doesn't show up correctly I try Mozilla [1.0rc2] (I've got pop-ups turned off in opera but not in mozilla) and then as a last resort its Explorer 6

I've become addicted to Opera's "mouse gestures" and often find myself trying them in Windows Explorer

The only thing they REALLY need to do is to lower the file size on the installer... 10 MB... sheesh.
Oh well, I'm still doing it... the things you do for GUI customization...
