what's the procedure to add text to an icon and keep the transparency

I may be misunderstanding but here's my take:
Create a 256x256 image with some text on it and remove anything not text.
Save it as a png.
Open IconDeveloper and convert the icon:
Select the sizes you want:
Save it and you are done.
Incredible this "transparency" thingo
